Kristen Stewart was told that hiding her sexuality might help her get a role in a Marvel movie. The star of the upcoming Charlie’s Angels has opened up about the difficulties she’s faced for refusing to put a label on her personal life and revealed it might have cost her a high-profile gig in the box office’s most profitable franchise.

Though she’s been acting since her early years, it was Stewart’s role as Bella Swan in the Twilight series which catapulted her into a new level of global superstardom. More recently, the actress has distinguished herself by collaborating with French film director Oliver Assayas. First, in 2014, she appeared in Clouds of Sils Maria. For her performance in the drama, she became the first American to win the prestigious César award. In 2016, she collaborated with Assayas on Personal Shopper. A ghost story, which is resistant to genre classifications, Personal Shopper relied heavily on Stewart’s quietly moving portrayal of grief and garnered major praise from audiences and critics. Charlie’s Angels certainly marks a return to a more audience-friendly, mainstream movie. But Stewart likes to mix it up. She’s even said in the past that she’d be open to appearing in a comic book adaptation. We now have some idea of why that hasn’t happened yet.

In a wide-ranging profile from Harper’s Bazaar, with Stewart appearing on the cover of the latest issue, the actress spoke candidly about some career advice she was given and how she reacted to it. Stewart doesn’t name any names and it’s unclear if this statement came from someone tied to Marvel Studios or, more directly, from within the star’s own circle. What is clear is that the advice, quite understandably, left a negative impression.

“I’ve fully been told, ‘If you just like do yourself a favor and don’t go out holding your girlfriend’s hand in public, you might get a Marvel movie.’ I don’t want to work with people like that.”

The reveal came in the context of a larger conversation about Stewart’s personal life, which was regular tabloid fodder at one point. She spoke about her relationship with ex-boyfriend, Robert Pattinson, who is suiting up to play Batman, and she elaborated on her reluctance to identify with one particular sexual orientation. Stewart feels that she’s a different person each day, and while she understands how the ambiguity might be frustrating to some, she regards it as a beautiful thing.

On a broader level, the advice might ring true to some ears. Marvel's been called out, even by Tom Holland, for its lacking diversity. That is changing slowly, though. The Eternals will make big strides towards a more diverse universe. Tessa Thompson, who plays Valkyrie, is openly lobbying for a queen. It might not be too late for Stewart to join the MCU.
