One of Spider-Man's most fearsome and yet enigmatic villains, Kraven the Hunter, is finally getting a sequel to the iconic Kraven's Last Hunt storyline. Announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Spider-Man: The Lost Hunt will bring readers back to a past era, when Peter Parker retired from being Spider-Man and was living as a normal, and powerless, human in Portland.

Kraven is one of the most fascinating Spider-Man villains, so much so that he is getting his own movie set in Sony's Spider-Man Universe. The only heir to a decadent Russian noble family, Sergei Kravinoff grew up idolizing strength, honor, and valor, and found the best expression of these values in hunting. After becoming the world's greatest hunter, Sergei grew bored of big game hunting and set his sights on a new kind of prey: Spider-Man. Beaten and humiliated several times by the hero, Kraven finally lost his grip on sanity during the critically-acclaimed Kraven's Last Hunt storyline, by J. M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck, which saw Kraven finally best Spider-Man (after shooting him with a gun) and then take his own life. The character would later be resurrected (and then die again), but Kraven's Last Hunt remains his most iconic story, and it's finally getting a sequel.

Announced at San Diego Comic-Com during Marvel Comics' Retailers Panel, Spider-Man: The Lost Hunt is written by J. M. DeMatteis himself, with art by Eder Messias. The story is set during an unusual time in Spider-Man's life, when Peter Parker retired from being a superhero and moved to Portland after mistakenly believing that he was a clone, and learning that Mary Jane was pregnant. During a miniseries titled Spider-Man: The Final Adventure, Peter even lost his powers (momentarily), and that's exactly where The Lost Hunt picks up. A man from Kraven's past is stalking the Parkers, and this mysterious connection will, according to Marvel Comics, finally reveal the real origins of one of Spider-Man's greatest foes. Enjoy a cover of the first issue by artist Ryan Brown, which calls back to an iconic scene from Kraven's Last Hunt.

J. M. DeMatteis left his mark as a legendary writer in Spider-Man's history. Fans must be really excited at the news that he is picking up again Spidey with a story about Kraven, whom he turned from a B-tier villain to one of the Wall-Crawler's most iconic foes. Kraven's Last Hunt is commonly recognized as one of the greatest Spider-Man stories of all time, thanks to its deep and complex narrative that makes it stand out from common superhero tales. The setting of The Lost Hunt, however, is also really interesting. Peter and MJ's time in Portland is a controversial subject among fans, as it was an integral part of the infamous Clone Saga, on which DeMatteis worked extensively. The decision to make Peter retire was quickly reversed by the editors, generating a lot of confusion and frustration from the fans, with DeMatteis even resigning out of creative weariness. The Lost Hunt, then, can be the perfect chance to go back to one of the most confusing times in Spider-Man's history, and perhaps answer lingering questions and resolve some hanging plot threads.

Spider-Man: The Lost Hunt promises to reveal secrets and answer mysteries that fans of the Webslinger have been wondering about for decades. The story will explore the depths of what made Kraven the Hunter one of the greatest Spider-Man villains, just in time for his movie debut. Spider-Man: The Lost Hunt #1 (of 5) will be available in November 2022.
