If Kong 2 ever happens in the MonsterVerse, the movie could borrow a monster from Toho’s Godzilla library. For now, there’s no word on whether or not Godzilla or Kong are getting new installments from Legendary, but either option is a possibility. While Godzilla 3 may be generating the most discussion, it shouldn’t be overlooked that Kong: Skull Island outgrossed both of Godzilla’s MonsterVerse films.

While it’s been reported that the studio may have some interest in doing their own take on Son of Kong from 1933, others are hoping that the MonsterVerse will keep the focus on the ape himself, especially since the ending of Godzilla vs. Kong created all sorts of storytelling potential for the character. By sending him to the MonsterVerse’s Hollow Earth, Godzilla vs. Kong made it possible for Kong 2 to be unique to any other King Kong movie. No longer the defender of Skull Island, Kong now safeguards a vast and beautiful world populated by an untold number of monster species. Given its size and scope, it’s likely that what Godzilla vs. Kong showed of it was only a glimpse.

For the most part, the Hollow Earth is an unexplored corner of the MonsterVerse that could contain threats that Kong and the humans know nothing about. While down there, Kong could encounter dangers much worse than the Skullcrawlers. In fact, some could even be Toho monsters associated with Godzilla. After all, Kong doesn’t really have an established rogues’ gallery, which is why if Legendary wants a familiar face for Kong 2’s villain, it may have to pick a Toho property. Of course, iconic adversaries of Godzilla like Destoroyah and Gigan should be saved for Godzilla sequels, but there are others that could be reworked as opponents of Kong.

King Caesar

Arguably the name that comes up the most when talking about potential foes for Kong is King Caesar, the heroic dog-like kaiju that teamed up with Godzilla to take down the latter’s robotic counterpart in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Though not truly a villain, he could be at odds with Kong over Godzilla vs. Kong’s ending. The movie concluded Kong’s story by making him the king of the Hollow Earth. The problem with that though is that he gained this title without conflict. As large as the Hollow Earth, it stands to reason that there are Titans out there who will contest Kong’s reign. One of them could be King Caesar, who may actually be the real king of the Hollow Earth. In Toho’s movies, the creature was depicted as an ancient, benevolent being worshipped by the people of Okinawa thousands of years ago. To summon him, he has to be awakened by a mystical song. All of these elements exist in the MonsterVerse thanks to the Mothra mythos in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, so it’s not hard to imagine King Caesar being reimagined as a Hollow Earth Titan. If King Caesar appears in Kong 2, he can be the ape’s chance to actually earn his King Kong title. Depending on what happens, an eventual team-up between the two could be on the table for later.

Gorosaurus

Prior to the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, there was only one monster in cinematic history who has crossed paths with both of the titular Titans: Gorosaurus. The giant Allosaurus monster, best known for delivering a kangaroo kick on Ghidorah in Destroy All Monsters, battled Kong in Toho’s King Kong Escapes. He could return to the big screen for the first time in over 50 years by challenging Kong for alpha status in the Hollow Earth in a future MonsterVerse movie. As a natural dinosaur, Gorosaurus could fit well into the MonsterVerse's Hollow Earth world. He could be utilized as the main threat that Kong has to defend his new home from, or he could be just a secondary antagonist that Kong has to deal with before the real enemy emerges.

Megalon

Megalon stands in front of the landscape from Godzilla vs Megalon

One Toho kaiju who wouldn’t need much of a reinvention to appear in Kong 2 is Megalon, a one-off villain who fought alongside Gigan against Godzilla and Jet Jaguar in Godzilla vs. Megalon. While his design could be in need of a menacing update, the cockroach-like monster’s backstory is perfect for the MonsterVerse. In Godzilla vs. Megalon, it was explained that the creature hails from a subterranean kingdom called Seatopia. There, he was treated like a god. Looking at the worldbuilding that the MonsterVerse has done thus far with King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong, Seatopia could indeed exist somewhere in its world as one of the MonsterVerse’s lost civilizations. Like Godzilla’s underwater city, Seatopia could have been destroyed several millennia ago. Or, it may be that Kong 2 will drop a shocking reveal by showing that the Hollow Earth humans of Seatopia are still alive. If so, they could send their champion to fight with Kong.

Hedorah

Godzilla Fights Hedorah

Hedorah is inherently different from all other Godzilla villains in terms of what he would offer to a Kong film. In Godzilla vs. Hedorah, the Japanese pop culture icon faced a great challenge when he had to save Japan from the Smog Monster, an alien entity that owed its power to humanity’s poor treatment of the environment. By feeding off pollution, Hedorah developed a tremendous amount of strength and was immune to most of Godzilla’s attacks. If he were to be the villain of Kong 2, he could take the movie in a different direction than the creatures mentioned above. Because unlike King Caesar, Gorosaurus, and Megalon, Hedorah isn’t a product of nature, and that’s a big part of why he makes so much sense for the MonsterVerse. Environmental themes are central to the Godzilla franchise and to the MonsterVerse as a whole.

Kong 2 can continue that via the Smog Monster, because what Hedorah would represent is humanity spreading its poison from the surface to the Hollow Earth. For thousands of years, the Hollow Earth has been untouched by human civilization, which could be why it’s still a vibrant and thriving ecosystem. But now that mankind has finally found it, the Hollow Earth’s future could become uncertain. If humans commercialize this place and mine its resources, it could unknowingly invite Hedorah down there, and possibly doom Kong’s new home. A villain that endangers the entire Hollow Earth could drastically raise the stakes for Kong’s next MonsterVerse adventure.
