I Know What You Did Last Summer star Ryan Phillippe gives his opinion on the upcoming Amazon series. Phillippe portrayed Barry Cox in the 1997 slasher movie, which was loosely based on the 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan. The first installment in the franchise focused on four friends (played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr, and Phillippe) who are targeted by a killer one year after they cover up a fatal car accident. The film was a success at the box office, grossing $125 million worldwide against a budget of $17 million. Two sequels followed, although the third movie is not a direct continuation of the first two.

It was announced, back in July 2019, that Amazon had given a straight-to-series order for a television adaptation of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Horror director James Wan serves as a producer on the series, which takes a similar premise to the films. It unfolds in a town full of secrets, centering around a group of teenagers that are stalked by a mysterious killer one year after a fatal graduation night accident. The television adaptation’s cast includes Madison Iseman, Brianne Tju, Ezekiel Goodman, and Ashley Moore.

Speaking with Comic Book to promote his new movie, Lady of the Manor, Phillippe gave his opinion on the upcoming reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer. The actor noted that he’d be open to doing a cameo, revealing that all of the film’s original cast is supportive of the Amazon show, and he also touched on the slasher’s legacy more than two decades after it first premiered. Phillipe said:

“I’d be open to doing a cameo in something like that. I love the project, and I love the fact that it’s held up over time and it still gets a new audience. Every couple of years, people are discovering it in different ways, and all of us original cast members are very much in support of this Amazon series. I’ve heard the new cast is really great, and I can’t wait to watch it.”

It’s worth noting that the series is based on Duncan’s novel rather than the film franchise. That could allow Phillipe to cameo as a different character, given that Barry is killed midway through I Know What You Did Last Summer, as a nod to fans of the original movies. A similar approach was taken by the recent He’s All That movie, which included appearances by actors Rachel Leigh Cook and Matthew Lillard in supporting roles. Both had starred in the 1990s rom-com She’s All That.

In the years since its release, the reputation of I Know What You Did Last Summer has grown. While its sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, is viewed as a lesser retread, the first installment has garnered appreciation for the way it took time to examine how all four main characters were changed by the inciting accident. A tense scene involving Gellar’s character, late in the film, has also garnered heavy praise. So, when it debuts its first four episodes on October 15, the reboot will have a lot to live up to.
