Knives Out director Rian Johnson confirms a trailer for the film will premiere tomorrow. Quickly falling into place late last year, the murder-mystery is one of 2019's most intriguing non-franchise offerings. Headlined by a dynamite cast that includes the likes of Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, and several other famous people, Knives Out is described as a modern whodunnit inspired by Agatha Christie. Footage for the film screened during CinemaCon back in April, teasing attendees with something that promised to be equal parts thrilling and entertaining.
Lionsgate is set to release Knives Out in November, over a typically loaded Thanksgiving frame that will include anticipated films such as Disney's Frozen 2 and Mr. Rogers biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (among other holdovers from earlier in the fall). As such, the studio would be wise to start revving up the marketing machine as we approach the end of the summer movie season, and that is precisely what is about to happen.
Johnson took to his Twitter account today to share the news that the Knives Out trailer will debut tomorrow (July 2, 2019). His post included a motion poster highlighting several of the key members of the ensemble. Check it out in the space below:
KNIVES OUT TRAILER TOMORROW! It’s an original modern day American whodunnit, coming out this Thanksgiving. It has a few actors you might recognize. I am very very excited about it. Watch this space... #KNIVESOUT pic.twitter.com/yC2yQLEWqh— Rian Johnson (@rianjohnson) July 1, 2019
As revealed in the CinemaCon footage, Christopher Plummer's character is the one whose murder is being investigated, which is why the Oscar-winner's profile is featured in the blood-soaked stamp on the poster. Attendees seemed to enjoy the CinemaCon presentation, so hopefully the official trailer is similarly well-received. It honestly wouldn't be too surprising if the theatrical preview was similar, or even identical, to the CinemaCon sizzle reel. That will depend on how the studio opts to market Knives Out to the general public. Surely, they'll want to emphasize the all-star cast, and Johnson's name carries a considerable amount of clout following Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Including his divisive entry in the Skywalker saga, Johnson has never been one to follow genre conventions with his films. Dating back to his first feature, Brick, he's always been one to put a unique spin on classic setups to provide audiences with something unique and fascinating. Johnson's approach doesn't always work for everyone, but odds are Knives Out won't be anything by-the-numbers. It'll be interesting to see what he has up his sleeve, and ideally this will be a compelling palate cleanser before he shifts gears to his new Star Wars trilogy.
