Rian Johnson's buzzed-about murder mystery Knives Out has gotten a final trailer that boasts the film's nearly perfect Rotten Tomatoes score. The Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer-director's new movie premiered at TIFF 2019 in September and has been generating superb word of mouth ever since then. Bursting at the seams with A-list talent, the Agatha Christie-inspired crime caper stars Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, a debonair detective called in to investigate the death of the world-famous crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), who passed away under suspicious circumstances right after his 85th birthday.
Lionsgate has already released a pair of trailers for Knives Out, with Johnson warning that those who're already sold on the film would do well to avoid the movie's marketing entirely from this point forward. Obviously, however, that doesn't mean the studio is going to let up on generating hype in the last few weeks before the murder-mystery hits theaters, and has now unveiled a final trailer that taps into Knives Out's excellent critical reception so far.
The final trailer for Knives Out is now online, and was released by Fandango (along with the not so subtle reminder for those interested to buy their tickets through the vendor). Check it out, below.
Thankfully, the new trailer doesn't spoil Knives Out plot any more than its predecessors, and is far more focused on singing the movie's praises (via enthusiastic pull-quote from a variety of outlets) and flaunting its impressive 99% Fresh grade from Rotten Tomatoes. And on the off-chance anyone is concerned that this is one of those situations where a film's high RT score doesn't reflect its far more mediocre typical rating, Knives Out is currently at an 8.55/10 average rating on the site. In other words, most critics are not only giving the darkly comedic detective yarn a thumbs up, they're ranking it as one of the best movies of the fall (and, in some cases, 2019 altogether).
Given the sparkling word of mouth, it begs the question: does Knives Out have a shot at landing some proper recognition this awards season? As widely acclaimed as Johnson's previous four directorial efforts were (especially Brick, Looper, and The Last Jedi), he's yet to land either a Golden Globe and/or an Oscar nomination for his craft; in fact, Looper didn't land any Oscar nods at all, even though some consider it one of the best sci-fi films of the 2010s period. That could well change with Knives Out, though, especially since an original throwback murder-mystery full of big name actors at the top of their game (not to mention, a funny cameo by Frank Oz, as teased in the final trailer) is more likely to play well with the Academy than Johnson's prior work has.
