Why Rian Johnson Wants To Make Knives Out 3 As His Next Movie

With audiences currently awaiting the next chapter in Benoit Blanc's journey, Rian Johnson teases his excitement to make Knives Out 3 his next movie. The whodunnit comedy franchise primarily revolves around Daniel Craig's eccentric private detective as he investigates a variety of mysteries, with the first film exploring the suspicious death of murder mystery novelist Harlan Thrombey, while the upcoming Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will see Benoit investigating a murder mystery game gone awry. Netflix acquired the rights for both the upcoming sequel and a Knives Out 3 later down the road, though it may not be as far out as some expect.

In the latest issue of Total Film (via Slash Film), Rian Johnson was asked about the development on the hotly anticipated Knives Out 3. The Glass Onion writer/director excitedly responded to the plans for the third movie, confirming his interest in making it as his next movie, while noting he's still formulating the plan for it. See what Johnson shared below:

I had for a while thought that maybe I should do something else first [...] But the God's honest truth is, I had so much fun making this one, and the creative challenge of figuring out a third movie that's completely different from both this one and the first one — right now, that's the most interesting creative challenge to me. So I might just dive in and see what we come up with.

Rian Johnson's Knives Out 3 Comments Are Very Promising

Daniel Craig in Knives Out 2

Given it took three years for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery to arrive, it'd be understandable for some to feel that Knives Out 3 would take some time to progress in development. Though Johnson indicates he hasn't quite landed on the plan for the third film, his comments regarding his excitement to dive right back in should prove very promising for those who have already fallen in love with the whodunnit franchise. With Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery having moved along relatively quickly following Netflix's acquisition of the rights to the property, it will be interesting to see if Johnson's turnaround time from development to filming proves even faster than the next movie.

The fact that Johnson is eager to dive right back in also indicates his lack of fatigue for the world he's created, something a variety of other filmmakers have run into throughout the years. James Wan is one of the more notable to find the need to change things up between various franchises, having departed the Saw series after helming the first film, while also having taken a break between Aquaman and its sequel to return to his horror genre roots for Malignant. With Johnson having already established himself in noir-driven storytelling, it seems his stepping away from the Knives Out franchise to helm something else wouldn't have been as effective for him or the Craig-led series.

With Johnson confirming his interest to make Knives Out 3 his next movie, it will be interesting to see how it affects his various other projects he's discussed throughout the years. Following reports it was put on the backburner, Johnson and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy have recently confirmed that talks for his Star Wars trilogy are still alive at the studio, in spite of the divisive response to The Last Jedi, but with his focus being on Benoit Blanc's future, these plans may be a bit further out. In the meantime, audiences can look forward to the return of Craig's eccentric detective with Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery hitting theaters on November 23, followed by Netflix on December 23.
