There's little that's been revealed of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake so far, but it has raised the possibility that the long-awaited third KOTOR game could one day happen. Plans for Knights of the Old Republic 3 were scrapped by LucasArts during the conceptual stage of development, despite both the first game and its sequel, The Sith Lords, being positively received. The timed PS5 exclusive KOTOR remake itself is still a ways off, and there has been no indication that its new developer, Aspyr, has any plans to do the sequel as well, but there's theoretically a chance that KOTOR 3 could become a reality.

The original Knights of the Old Republic, developed by BioWare, came out nearly two decades ago in 2003. The reins for a sequel were handed off to Obsidian, who released The Sith Lords only two years later in 2005. Both titles can be considered among the most beloved Star Wars games, and - aside from dated graphics - still hold up as incredible RPGs. The original KOTOR was most recently re-released on Nintendo Switch, keeping some of the excitement for the series alive. Multiple ports have been done over the years, but many still wonder what a third KOTOR could've accomplished.

KOTOR 2's development was infamously rushed, with mods that restore some of its cut content being considered a necessity by many fans. KOTOR 3 was in the works at LucasArts, but the project was canned before serious development began. Instead, the KOTOR legacy would be inherited by the 2011 MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, which has now enjoyed a decade of success. While many consider certain aspects of SWTOR to be a worthy successor to KOTOR, there are those who would probably want Knights of the Old Republic 3 to happen. Things may be turning a corner, though, now that the KOTOR remake is on the horizon.

Knights Of The Old Republic 3 Depends On KOTOR Remake's Success

The possibility of KOTOR 3 depends on the remake's success

While the possibility of finally getting Knights of the Old Republic 3 is still faint, the remake on the horizon presents the best opportunity in years for it to actually happen. It does, however, depend heavily on the remake's success. The only way a KOTOR 3 would get the green light seems to be if the remake was so well-received that it prompted a remake of The Sith Lords as well, which would, in turn, have to be just as - if not more - successful in order to convince Lucasfilm Games to go ahead with a brand new game.

The remake of KOTOR will surely be a lot of work, but not as much as creating a third installment from nearly scratch would be. There was at one point a script which ended Darth Revan's journey with ancient Sith Lords, and a handful of concept art which indicated which planets may have been involved, but there's no way of knowing whether or not these materials would be used. Unfortunately, finally getting a third Knights of the Old Republic still feels like an incredible long shot, but the upcoming remake at least brings a little bit of hope going forward.
