James Gunn explains why his plans to make a continuation of Knight Rider with David Hasselhoff have failed to come to fruition. Knight Rider is a classic series from the 1980s that starred Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a man who uses a highly advanced talking car named KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand) to fight crime. The original series ran on NBC for 4 seasons beginning in 1982 but grew into a surprisingly robust franchise encompassing a spinoff titled Knight Rider: Code of Vengeance, two reboot series in 1997 and 2008 following relatives of Michael Knight working for the same organization, plus Knight Rider TV movies and 5 Knight Rider video games.

A reboot of Knight Rider - either as a film or a TV series - has been in development hell for quite some time. As early as 2013, Arrested Development's Brad Copeland was signed on to pen a reboot, and various personages have been attached in the intervening years including Aquaman director James Wan and Fast & Furious director Justin Lin. Although there hasn't been a peep from the project recently, the latest news as of January 2021 was that the film was at Spyglass in the hands of screenwriter T.J. Fixman, and David Hasselhoff was emotionally invested and involved in the project.

On Twitter, James Gunn was asked which 80's TV show he would most love to reboot between AirwolfKnight Rider, and Street Hawk. In response, he revealed that he and Hasselhoff have frequently had discussions about doing a continuation of the series set in modern times. However, the director - who has been hopping from superhero to superhero between Guardians of the Galaxy 1, 2, 3The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker - has found that "there aren't enough hours in the day to do all the cool things I want to do!" Although Gunn has said he is friends with Hasselhoff, they have only worked together on one major occasion. The star provided a song for the soundtrack of 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 titled  "Guardians Inferno" in which he raps about Star-Lord and the events of the film in a pastiche of classic rap title tracks from the '80s. He also appeared in a music video for the song alongside James Gunn himself.

Although Gunn and Hasselhoff may not be teaming on a reboot of Knight Rider anytime soon, their discussions were still fruitful. If this Spyglass film reboot is really happening, maybe an idea the pair came up with together will live on in the new iteration. Gunn's idiosyncratic style remains popular in modern filmmaking, and having his flavor on a new version of the cheesy classic series would definitely be an interesting way for the material to find new fans.
