David Hasselhoff Wants Logan-Style Knight Rider With Robert Rodriguez

David Hasselhoff is hassling director Robert Rodriguez about making a Logan-style Knight Rider film. While many know Hasselhoff as the studly leader of the Baywatch lifeguard crew that had a monstrous run on syndicated TV worldwide throughout the 1990s, the actor, affectionately known as "The Hoff," built up a huge fan base long before taking to the sand beaches of Southern California and becoming a rock star in Germany.

In Knight Rider, Hasselhoff starred as Michael Knight – a crimefighter who took to the streets to battle the bad guys along with artificially intelligent car KITT – in a successful NBC-TV action drama that ran from 1982 to 1986. And while Hasselhoff has reprised the role in the TV movie Knight Rider 2000 in 1991 and appeared in one episode of a Knight Rider revival series which ran for 18 episodes on NBC from 2008-2009, the actor doesn't appear to be quite ready to park his old pal KITT quite yet. In fact, it sounds like The Hoff wants to bring back the tale of the man and machine with the same sort of mettle that powered the year's grittiest superhero film.

Following word that Hasselhoff discussed rebooting Knight Rider with Guardians of the Galaxy writer-director James Gunn, the actor tells CinemaBlend that he also recently talked with Rodriguez and presented him with his decidedly different film version about Michael Knight and KITT. He says:

"I have met Robert Rodriguez. He does Dusk til Dawn and Machete. And I said 'You need to do Knight Rider.' Because he was doing a marathon of Knight Riders and he said 'Can we have a selfie!?' And I said, 'No, I don't want a selfie! I want to do the movie! I want to shoot the TV series! I want to bring it back and make it dark! Michael Knight comes back and he's pissed.' ... I hope it happens, and if it does, it'll be kind of like Logan. It will be dark. Hasselhoff as Michael Knight in 2017. Knight Rider. The saga continues."

While Hasselhoff has become a master of self-parody over the years, his ideas are specific enough to be more than just off-the-cuff remarks by the actor. And given Rodriguez's reputation for gritty, no-holds-barred action and horror films, Hasselhoff seems to have found the right person to at the very least consider his ideas.

As unrealistic as some may consider a Knight Rider movie to be, there's no question that Hasselhoff still has a huge presence whenever he appears on the big screen. He was the best part of the hapless Baywatch big screen adaptation (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and company played their roles like they were in an episode of the TV series while The Hoff was clearly in on the joke of his appearance); and his quick cameo and references to him in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 were outrageously entertaining - as was his turn in the "Guardians Inferno" music video featured in the Vol. 2 video release.

The problem is, if Hasselhoff truly wants a Logan feel with a Knight Rider movie, there's very little room in a setting like that for humor – which at this stage in his career is the actor's biggest selling point. No matter what happens, you have to credit The Hoff for his willingness to mix things up a bit and get creative with an R-rated premise for Knight Rider. Until then, the best fans can hope for is that Hasselhoff will have a larger presence in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
