It’s been a weak summer so far – as several highly-anticipated movies have come and gone with little or no excitement.
As a result, now is the perfect time for a film to slip under the radar and take everyone by surprise. One possible contender is the spy action film Knight and Day starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.
Today Fox Studios released a “Super Trailer” for Knight and Day – and it definitely lives up to its name.
Most people have heard about the film but from what I can tell it’s not very high on people’s “Must Watch” list. I think that bodes well for Knight and Day because people won’t be going in with high expectations and positive word-of-mouth could propel this into unexpected high box office territory.

In addition to the “Super Trailer”, The Sun has an extended four minute clip from the beginning of the film that’s definitely worth checking out:

Knight and Day stars Cruise as Agent Miller, Diaz as June Havens, and Peter Sarsgaard (Green Lantern) – as Fitzgerald, the agent in pursuit of Miller for unknown reasons. The script was written by Patrick O’Neill and directed by James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma).
Cruise looks to really be on his action/comedy game in these videos and Cameron Diaz, while at first comes across as the ditzy blonde, looks like she might actually pull off being more than a damsel in distress. I really didn’t care for her action scenes in either of the Charlie’s Angels films – so it’ll be interesting to see if she pulls it off this round.
If I was to find one thing to complain about with the above clips, it would be the over use of CG SFX and green screen shots (car door flying off, motorcycle in the bullfighting arena, Cruise dropping on moving car).
That said, Knight and Day seems like a great fit to energize the box office – since Iron Man 2 left a lot of viewers with mixed feelings, Robin Hood was nowhere near as good as it should have been, MacGruber played to a narrow audience (which was reflected in the box office numbers), and we’re seeing a lot of unfavorable reviews for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
What do you think? Could Knight and Day end up being the fun sleeper hit of the summer?
Knight and Day opens in US theaters June 25th, 2010 and UK cinemas August 6th, 2010.
