Kitty Pryde Movie Being Developed By Deadpool Director

Update: Tim Miller teams with Brian Michael Bendis for what looks to be the Kitty Pryde movie.

Fox continues to surprise with their X-Men spinoff plans, as a Kitty Pryde movie is reportedly in the works from Tim Miller. The X-Men cinematic universe has spent almost two decades crafting a pantheon of sequels, prequels, and spinoffs - though with a loose sense on continuity, at most. Following the success of Deadpool and Logan, Fox has double-down on side projects, with The New Mutants and Deadpool 2 arriving this year, and Gambit and X-Force films in active development. Even a James Franco-starring Multiple Man movie is now in the works.

Much like Marvel Studios, Fox seems to believe it can turn somewhat obscure characters into household names with the right film. Of course, only Deadpool has proven this point so far, but the next few years will test the theory. The one obvious spanner in the works, however, is Disney's buyout of 20th Century Fox. Disney plans to keep making Deadpool movies and it's hard to believe that they would put a stop to the X-Men and other franchises. However, without knowing Marvel and Kevin Feige's plans for the X-Men characters, their future is a bit up in the air. That hasn't stopped Fox from developing additional films, though.

Collider is reporting that a Kitty Pryde film is currently in the works from Deadpool director Tim Miller. Like Multiple Man, this announcement comes out of nowhere, though at least Kitty Pryde is more well-known on film and in the comics. The project is still in the earliest stages, but it's our first indication that Fox isn't slowing down their development process in the wake of the Disney buyout.

Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde in X-Men: Days of Future Past

For the time being, it appears to be business as usual for both Fox' movie and television divisions in the wake of the Disney buyout. The news of a Kitty Pryde movie may be unexpected, but it makes sense for Fox to want Miller to make another superhero film for them. After departing Deadpool 2, it wasn't clear if Fox and Miller were still on good terms. Now that Miller is developing another project for the studio from scratch, it appears we have an answer to that question.

Kitty Pryde has appeared in multiple X-Men films now, including both X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past, where she was played by Ellen Page. It's not clear if Page would return for a solo film, but the character will probably be rebooted given Fox's proclivities with the X-Men franchise. When it comes to stories for the mutant with the power to phase through objects, some of her best known ones involve Wolverine. Of course, if Fox and Disney finally merge their Marvel properties, then Pryde could be headed to space to join the Guardians of the Galaxy, like she has in the comics in recent years.

Even outside of the Disney/Fox deal complications, Kitty Pryde is sure to be a ways off. Miller is currently working on Terminator 6 and he's also producing the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Despite being out of the Deadpool franchise now, the original film certainly launched Miller's career. If the Merc with a Mouth's solo movie is any indication, Miller may be the perfect person to bring Kitty Pryde to life.
