New Line Cinema's The Kitchen comic book movie eyes Girls Trip star Tiffany Haddish for a starring role. Thanks to the recent surge in popularity of comic book adaptations on the big and small screens, even lesser known properties are being given the live-action treatment. One such property comes from DC Comics' imprint Vertigo. The comic, titled The Kitchen, is an eight-issue miniseries written by Ollie Masters and drawn by artist Ming Doyle that debuted to critical acclaim in 2014, and has since earned a dedicated cult following.
It was reported last year that New Line Cinema was developing a movie based on The Kitchen, with Straight Outta Compton screenwriter Andrea Berloff set to pen the script. The last update on the project came in February of this year, when it was announced New Line had tapped Berloff to direct The Kitchen as well, which would make the film her directorial debut. Now it seems the studio is continuing to move forward with the Vertigo adaptation, since they've begun casting.
In a Variety report about her upcoming projects, it was revealed Girls Trip breakout star Tiffany Haddish is in talks for a lead role in New Line's The Kitchen, though it's unclear which of the three main female characters she's being eyed to play. Additionally, Variety reports that it's unclear when The Kitchen will begin filming, but speculates it will start production prior to Haddish's other film project, The Temp, which is set up at Universal.
The Kitchen comic book series is set against the backdrop of 1970s New York City and follows the story of three mafia wives who must take over the family business when their husbands are arrested in an FBI sting. However, they run the Irish mafia in Hell's Kitchen even more viciously than their husbands ever did, and not only are the women good at their new positions of power, they begin to wonder what will happen when their husbands are eventually released from prison.
While The Kitchen certainly isn't your typical comic book fair - insofar as "typical" refers to caped superheroes - it tells a story that will appeal to moviegoers and TV watchers of all kinds. There have been a number of mafia-focused crime movies to receive a great deal of critical acclaim, and gone on to become modern classics, including The Godfather, Goodfellas, Scarface, and, more recently, The Departed. However, The Kitchen presents a female reboot, if you will, of the genre by shifting the focus to the wives of the typically male mob bosses.
While it remains to be seen if The Kitchen will be another major hit in the organized crime drama genre, but it's shaping up to be a much different kind of comic book adaptation. With New Line only just starting the casting process, it's unclear exactly what Berloff's adaptation of the Vertigo series will look like once it all comes together. However, Haddish is a rising star in Hollywood - coming off Girls Trip and a recent history-making turn hosting Saturday Night Live - and Berloff herself is an Oscar-nominated screenwriter, so the development process of The Kitchen is looking promising.
