When thinking of frightening video game characters, most players probably won't jump to Nintendo's Kirby franchise as their first thought. Although the games are by no means free from conflict, they don't normally tend to be overwhelmingly intense, even for younger players. Some of Kirby's final bosses, though, are surprisingly intimidating or even creepy.

It isn't all that unusual for Nintendo to add relatively scary aspects into their games. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is arguably notorious for having many frightening elements, such as the creepy-looking Moon or the threatening Happy Mask Salesman. Although many Nintendo games aren't strictly horror, they do at times strongly lean into the genre. Often, purposeful design choices are made to create an unsettling environment that generates tension for players.

However, the Kirby series is one of Nintendo's more cheerful franchises in the eyes of fans. This may be because of Kirby's endearing design - the titular character appears as a pink sphere with a nearly-perpetual smile. Although Kirby games are no stranger to darker elements, many players would argue that it doesn't tread quite as far into that territory as The Legend of Zelda or other Nintendo games might. That being said, there are quite a few bosses in the Kirby series that are downright disturbing.

Most Disturbing Kirby Bosses - Zero

The Kirby Series' Most Disturbing Final Bosses

Zero is introduced as the final boss of Kirby's Dream Land 3, and also serves as the main antagonist throughout the rest of the game as well as the leader of the Dark Matter species. No background is known about it, and it doesn't have any clear motivations outside of what players can discern from the actions of the Dark Matter. They are shown invading and infesting planets, though it's unknown as to why. This seemingly mindless chaos is part of what makes Zero so unnerving. Some dedicated Kirby fans also theorize that the final boss 0² from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is another form of Zero, but their connection is speculative at best despite their similar appearances.

Most Disturbing Kirby Bosses - Dark Matter

The Kirby Series' Most Disturbing Final Bosses

Dark Matter - the character, not the species - debuted in Kirby's Dream Land 2, where he was the primary antagonist and final boss. He's shown to be capable of possessing other characters and his end goal is to shroud the world in darkness. Since his first appearance, he has shown up in various other entries in the Kirby series. In Kirby Dream Land 3, Dark Matter must be once again banished before players can confront the true final boss of the game. He can also be spotted in more recent titles like Kirby Star Allies.

Most Disturbing Kirby Bosses - Void Termina

The Kirby Series' Most Disturbing Final Bosses

The final boss of Kirby Star Allies, Void Termina, goes through several form changes across the game. While his ultimate form is arguably less than threatening - he appears as a purple Kirby-like sphere - a few of the alternate appearances that come before it are pretty disturbing. Void Termina is the reincarnated form of Void, a creature that utilizes darkness and negative energy and serves as the Destroyer of Worlds. In the eyes of many fans, he was a surprisingly dark addition to the normally colorful and lighthearted Kirby series.
