New Kirby and the Forgotten Land screenshots showcase two of the upcoming game’s boss fights, one looks like a twist on a classic, but the other is brand new. The Forgotten Land is the latest installment in the Kirby series, bringing the loveable pink sphere to an explorable 3D world. The most recent trailer for Kirby and the Forgotten Land showed off many of the various copy abilities Kirby will have access to in the game, from classics like Sword and Hammer, along with brand new abilities like Drill and Explosion.

The original announcement of this highly anticipated addition to the Kirby series was announced during a Nintendo Direct last September. Shots of Kirby exploring abandoned ruins in what seems like the ruins of an ancient civilization have inspired fans to wonder what the story is behind this game. Since then new details have arrived showing that there will be cooperative play in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, where the second player plays as the spear-wielding side-character, Bandana Waddle Dee. Although it’s not clear yet if Bandana Waddle Dee will be an independently playable character, or if he will be relegated to playing second fiddle to Kirby the whole time.

In new screenshots posted to Twitter by the official Nintendo of America account, two boss fights from Kirby and the Forgotten Land were shown. First, was a classic twist on the common tree battle from most Kirby games in Tropic Woods. This tree takes the appearance of a palm tree, rather than the classic woodlands style tree. Next was the “strong-armed beast,” Gorimondo, a giant ape that wears a cage necklace that appears to contain some innocent Waddle Dees. It’s not clear what role either of these bosses will play in the larger story of the game, but at least those Waddle Dees will be thankful to be saved from Gorimondo.

In the upcoming months prior to Kirby and the Forgotten Land’s release, there is still a lot to learn, but fans can’t help but notice some similarities to other games. The announcement footage of Kirby wandering through apocalyptic ruins reminded some fans of the much grittier game, The Last of Us, and that caused some players to wonder if any of the classic Kirby NPCs will appear in the game or not. While open-world doesn’t quite fit with what Kirby and the Forgotten Land will be, it is following a common trend in popular game titles lately. The highly anticipated Pokémon Legends: Arceus releases next week, bringing a much more explorable world to the Pokémon franchise, and just a few months ago at the Game Awards 2021, Sonic Frontiers was announced, potentially bringing the famous blue hedgehog to an open-world environment.

Since the reveal trailer, players have been comparing Kirby and the Forgotten Land to other Nintendo titles like Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Some fans even think that this entry could be as game-changing for Kirby as Super Mario 64 was for the Mario games. There's no doubt that breaking into the 3D world with a solid game could be huge for this series. For now, fans will have to wait until later this year to try out the exciting new game.
