Warning: SPOILERS for Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season 3.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season 3 is now available to stream on Netflix, but should fans expect a season 4? Premiering in January 2020, the series comes from DreamWorks Animation and Studio Mir. The first two seasons of Kipo were comprised of 10 episodes each, and the same is true for season 3. Kipo stars Karen Fukuhara in the lead role, and includes Deon Cole, Sterling K. Brown, and Dan Stevens among its cast.

Set on a post-apocalyptic Earth where animals have mutated into sentient beings, called mutes, and humans have been forced to live underground, Kipo follows a young girl with special abilities thanks to her having both human and mute DNA, making her the key to achieving peace between the two. Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season 3 picks up the story as Dr. Emilia, a human scientist, has developed a "cure" for mutes that reverses their mutations, turning them back into normal animals. Dr. Emilia wants to use the cure to rid the world of mutes and put humans back on top, both literally and figuratively, but Kipo believes a future where humans and mutes coexist is possible, and she'll fight to make it happen.

With Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season 3 out now, here's what the future holds for Kipo and her friends - particularly if they'll return in season 4 or not.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts Season 3 Is The End

Kipo Poster

Kipo and the Ages of Wonderbeasts season 3 is the final season of the show. Not only does the conclusion of season 3 make it clear this is the end of the story, but when Kipo season 3 was announced it was confirmed as being the final season. Three seasons is fairly typical for Netflix shows, and it's possible Kipo was only ordered for three seasons in the first place. Kipo season 3 does wrap up the series in a satisfying manner, and that may indicate the creators knew they only had three seasons in which to tell their story.

Will Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts Season 4 Ever Happen?

Kipo and the age of wonderbeasts season 2

A Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season 4 seems not only unlikely but unnecessary, too. The ending to Kipo season 3 resolves the battle between Kipo and Dr. Emilia, and more importantly, it finally unites humans and mutes. The divide between the two groups has been the main conflict for the entire show, and in the final episode's epilogue, humans and mutes are shown living together on the surface. A Kipo season 4 would need to create some new conflict for Kipo and her friends to deal with, and while not impossible, it could come across as too contrived given how perfect the ending is now.

That being said, Kipo creator, Radford Sechrist, has expressed interest in seeing the story continue with movies. So while it may not be in Netflix or DreamWorks Animation's plans to follow up Kipo season 3 with a movie, Kipo's creator is up for it. The concept originally began as a webcomic, after all, so future Kipo stories could even be told in another medium.

What Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts Season 4's Story Could Be

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season 3 epilogue scene

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season 3 ends with an epilogue set five years in the future that sees humans and mutes both living on the surface in rebuilt cities. The epilogue briefly shows the lives of all the main characters, and presumably, either a Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts season 4 or movie would pick up not long after the epilogue. While the world may seem harmonious now, there's a likelihood that keeping the peace between humans and mutes will require constant work. This could mean a Kipo season 4 could see Kipo using her Mega Jaguar powers to be something of a peacekeeper. Then again, future Kipo stories might instead be set within the five years between the Kipo season 3 finale and the epilogue, exploring how the seemingly peaceful future was attained.

Having examined so much of Kipo's backstory across its three seasons, the backstories of other characters, like Benson or Wolf, could be further explored in more episodes or a movie. Future Kipo stories could also dig into the history of the world itself. Kipo begins with the surface world already mutated and humans forced underground, but either a season 4 or movie could shed some light on just how the world came to be like this. If and how Kipo's story continues remains to be seen, but Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts has such a fascinating world filled with great characters that there's ample opportunity for more stories to be told.
