The King's Man director Matthew Vaughn is opening up about what fans can expect from the upcoming Kingsman 3. A third Kingsman film has been planned for a while now, and it came as a bit of a surprise when Vaughn, who has directed every film in the series, decided to work on the prequel The King's Man first. The prequel, which opens next week, is set in the early 1900s during the first World War. It explores the beginnings of the Kingsman secret service, with Ralph Fiennes and Harris Dickinson stepping in to play the lead roles.

The third Kingsman film, reportedly titled Kingsman: The Blue Blood, was first announced back in 2017 prior to the release of the series' second entry, Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The third film was initially intended to be shot back-to-back with The King's Man, however that plan never came to fruition, and Vaughn recently confirmed they are now on track to start production in September of next year. Late last year Marv Group CEO Zygi Kamasa also revealed that they, alongside Vaughn, were developing seven more films in the Kingsman universe. While there is no word on what these additional films will be, there have been reports that a television spin-off based on the "Statesman," the US equivalent of the Kingsman established in the second film, is actively being developed.

When speaking with Screen Rant and a select few other outlets at a roundtable event to promote The King's Man, Vaughn was open and excited to talk about the upcoming third Kingsman film. He said that the story will delve even further into the relationship between Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Harry (Colin Firth). He continued to explain how the third entry will test their relationship in new ways, and it will see the characters coming to terms with either their love or hate for one another. His full quote reads:

“Eggsy and Harry [will be in it], obviously. But it’s the gang coming back together and it's one of those moments that…when we wrote the screenplay, it was very much about, okay, I saw how people loved the relationship of Eggsy and Harry. So we just came up with this thing, what could be the ultimate reason for them to either fall in love or to hate each other forever? So that's what this movie is all about is will they or won't they, let’s just say."

Eggsy and Harry were the lead characters of the first two Kingsman films, so it's not a big surprise that they will continue to serve those roles in the third. The first film saw Harry taking Eggsy under his wing and inducting him into the same secret service that Eggsy's father worked for. Just as Harry and Eggsy's bond was strengthening, however, Harry was seemingly killed by that film's villain Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson). The Golden Circle brought Harry back by revealing that the Statesman were able to save his life with advanced technology.

While Vaughn's comments don't give any specific details about the plot of Kingsman 3, it is good to hear that Eggsy and Harry will once again be at the center of the film. Egerton and Firth have tremendous chemistry together, and while The Golden Circle wasn't great, their dynamic was one of the best parts. It has yet to be seen if any elements of storylines established in The King's Man will make their way into Kingsman 3, but considering the films were originally planned to shoot back-to-back, one would assume they would have some connective tissue. Fans will likely find out for sure when The King's Man opens next week.
