Kingsman: The Secret Service was one of the surprise hits of early 2015. Directed by Matthew Vaughn and adapted from Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons’ graphic novel called The Secret Service, the film borrowed a great deal from the James Bond mythos — the tuxedos especially — while exercising a shocking amount of audacity in regards to sex and violence. Starring Taron Egerton, Mark Strong and Colin Firth, the film earned over $400 million worldwide.
A sequel to Kingsman, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, is set for release next summer, with Vaughn and screenwriter Jane Goldman returning, along with Egerton, Strong and new cast members Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal, Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges. The sequel is currently in post-production – and now, screenwriter Goldman has given an interview in which she shares what to expect from the second Kingsman movie.
It’s more crazy than the first one, if such thing is possible, it’s pretty crazy… We’re very fortunate to have Julianne Moore playing the villain, and she’s incredible… I think that people who enjoyed the first one won’t be disappointed. It’s not about trying to do something more shocking, or more out there, it’s about hopefully that freshness and surprise to action scenes, so they don’t go in the direction you think they’re going in.”
So what do we know about Kingsman: The Golden Circle? It sounds like, despite questions about how exactly Colin Firth fits into the equation and the setting of at least part of the film in the United States, there’s going to be quite a bit of continuity: same director, same writer and, according to Goldman, a similar mindset as the first film. The freshness of action setpieces is something to expect from Vaughn, who has brought impeccably staged action to past films like Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, in addition to the first Kingsman movie installment.
Then again, the Britishness of the first Kingsman was a key part of its appeal and its identity; it remains to be seen whether that vibe will survive the move to the U.S. And it’s hard to imagine the second Kingsman coming up with something anywhere close to as delightfully unexpected as the final kicker of the first movie.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle arrives in U.S. theaters on June 17th, 2016
