With the follow-up to director Matthew Vaughn’s successful Kingsman: The Secret Service adaptation still a little less than a year off, fans of the franchise have slowly but surely been treated to a trickle of news pertaining to the sequel. Like any highly sought after film, there’s been a steady stream of curiosity regarding what Kingsman: The Golden Circle will have to offer and given the amount of time until it arrives, a surprising number of questions have in fact, already been answered.
We already know, for example, that the story will see the return of Taron Egerton as Gary “Eggsy” Unwin as well as Mark Strong as Merlin, plus a slew of new casting additions including Vinnie Jones (The Magnificent Seven), Jeff Bridges, Elton John, Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, Julianne Moore and Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal. Yet despite these names, one actor in particular has been hovering somewhere in the is-he-or-isn’t-he returning category for some time now, prompting much buzz and discussion. That actor is, of course, Colin Firth.
Thanks to a new on-set photo from Pedro Pascal’s Instagram account, the debate surrounding Firth’s return has now become slightly less ambiguous. The photo (as seen below) clearly reveals Firth dressed in the signature glasses, starched white shirt and black tie of his Kingsman character, Harry Hart. Pascal can be seen hiding behind Firth, barely peering over the actor’s shoulder. The photo’s caption reads: Hide behind Harry. #SafePlace #Kingsman2 #TheGoldenCircle.
Perhaps now the bigger question that many Kingsman fans will be asking is how exactly could Harry Hart possibly still be alive, given he was shot in the head at point blank range by Samuel L Jackson’s character Valentine in the first Kingsman film? Unfortunately, for now that remains very much a mystery. What we do know about The Golden Circle’s plot is that this time around, Eggsy and Merlin will join forces with the Kingsman’s American counterpart, The Statesman, to battle a threat to global security. Whether or not Firth’s appearance in the film is part of a flashback that could reveal details about past efforts to stop the sequel’s criminal element or perhaps dealings with The Statesman itself, is entirely down to conjecture at this point.
Of course, there are numerous ways that Harry Hart could still be alive for The Golden Circle if one is willing to stretch their imagination. One possibility is that it wasn’t actually Hart who was killed, but rather a decoy sent by the Kingsman as a means of distracting Valentine and his crew. Another could be that Hart was not immediately killed by the single bullet and later received the medical attention necessary to save his life. And yet another option is that Hart’s return in The Golden Circle is, as suspected by many, a flashback – though this possibility doesn’t seem nearly as fun.
For now, the conjecture will simply have to continue. It will be interesting to ultimately see exactly what brings Hart back to the Kingsman franchise, but perhaps just as interesting will be the numerous fan theories that are sure to crop up over the next year regarding the secret agent’s much anticipated return.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle will be released on June 16, 2017
