Andy Serkis is calling Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' story mind-blowing. Though he will not appear in the upcoming installment, the actor portrayed the genetically enhanced chimpanzee, Caesar, through all prior entries in the Planet of the Apes reboot. Following the rapid spread of Simian Flu, Caesar and other highly evolved apes took to the forests and began fighting to exist alongside the rest of humanity. Premiering May 24, 2024, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will explore the next phase of the franchise’s story.

Anticipation has been building since story details for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes were revealed and now, Serkis is giving the film some early praise. In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, the actor shared his thoughts based on what he knows about the film, stating that he thinks “it’s gonna blow people’s minds.” Read Serkis’ comments regarding Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes below:

"I think Wes Ball is going to do an amazing job with this film. I think it’s, from what I’ve heard and what I’ve seen, there’s some amazing conceptual artwork. And where they’ve chosen to land the story and take off with the next iteration, I think it’s gonna blow people’s minds."

How Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Will Continue The Franchise

Caesar (Andy Serkis) in War for the Planet of the Apes

Though the latest Planet of the Apes film switches directors, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver from the first two installments returned to write the script. After 2017's War for the Planet of the Apes, it seemed like the battle against humans might finally be over. In Caesar's final attempt to defeat the Colonel (Woody Harrelson) and his army, he is shot. After leading the apes to a new home, where they will presumably be safe, Caesar succumbs to his wound and dies, leaving questions about the story's focus moving forward.

The Simian Flu will likely still be a part of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' plot since the idea of it mutating was introduced. From what has been revealed, the new movie will take place years after Caesar's death and observe different ape clans and the conflict that arises when they become enslaved by one of their own. One ape will set out with a human in search of freedom, and given the ending of War for the Planet of the Apes, it is worth wondering if those characters will be Cornelius and Nova.

The title of the next Planet of the Apes film suggests potential friction among the clans, while also possibly tying in a moment from the last installment, in which the Colonel talks about Caesar's son inheriting his "kingdom." That movie ends with Maurice (Karin Konoval) informing Caesar that Cornelius would grow up knowing what he did for their kind. While waiting for a first look at Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Serkis' comments should only lead to more excitement.
