Even though Kingdom Hearts 3 served as a conclusion to the current story, it opened up a whole slew of new questions for fans. One of the most mysterious aspects of Kingdom Hearts 3 is a new character named Yozora.

The ReMind DLC showed that Yozora was much more than an Easter Egg character, and could end up being an integral piece of Kingdom Hearts' story going forward. The real question, of course, is just who is Yozora?

There are countless theories about the identity of Yozora, but one is particularly interesting. Some fans think that Yozora could be the Nobody of Noctis, the hero from Final Fantasy XV. Except there's a bit of a catch, as he'd actually be the Nobody of the original version of Noctis from Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Here's everything explained about the Yozora is Noctis' nobody theory.

The Connection Between Versus XIII and Kingdom Hearts

This theory requires a bit of explanation first; specifically about the development of Final Fantasy Versus XIII. In 2006 Square Enix announced the Fabula Nova Crystallis sub-series, a compilation of titles that would share similar themes. Three games were announced for the sub-series; Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Agito XIII, and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Two games would release as Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0, but Versus XIII ran into significant development problems and sat in limbo for nearly a decade. Tetsuya Nomura, the creator of Kingdom Hearts, was originally the director for Versus XIII but was replaced with Hajime Tabata when the project was turned into Final Fantasy XV.

Nomura still held an attachment to the Versus XIII concept, and the end of Kingdom Hearts 3 ReMind recreates one of the game's trailers, beat for beat. It seemed like Nomura was determined to bring the Versus concept to life whether it was Final Fantasy or not, but there might be more to it.

Why Fans Think Yozora Is Noctis' Nobody

The ending of ReMind brings some big revelations for Yozora's character; he knows Sora's name, his current body isn't what he really looks like, and he may have some relation to Luxord. An interesting tidbit was discovered by fans about Yozora's earrings, as their design is the Nobody symbol. Most Nobodies have the symbol on their body in some way, for example, the Dusks have it emblazoned right on their heads. Yozora also has a Chocobo charm on the zipper of his jacket, which is one of the iconic monsters of Final Fantasy.

Fans have pointed out a wealth of similarities between Yozora and Noctis. Both characters can summon weapons from thin air, both have multiple weapons they can use, and both have some kind of royal/leadership role. Interestingly, the two characters' names also translate to the same thing. Yozora translates to "Night Sky" in Japanese, and Noctis translates from Latin into "Night Light Sky." Then there's the entire recreated scene from Versus XIII. These similarities could, of course, simply be referencing Versus, and see Nomura finally bringing his concept to life. However, there just seems to be more to it, especially when considering that Yozora says this isn't what he normally looks like.

Powerful nobodies in Kingdom Hearts can take on entirely different looks from their original, like Namine and Roxas. This could easily be the same idea for Yozora. YouTuber The Night Sky Prince also points out that in the Toy Box world Rex tells Sora and crew that he couldn't beat Bahamut in Verum Rex. This suggests that Yozora's world is indeed some kind of Final Fantasy world or a parallel of one. There's one more interesting fact that ties into this theory. The mysterious Master of Masters is voiced by Ray Chase, the same voice actor of Noctis in Final Fantasy XV. This could mean nothing, but if that's the case it's a huge coincidence considering the Master of Masters and Yozora are both seen in the secret ending of Kingdom Hearts 3. The Versus XIII version of Noctis has technically never appeared in a game since XV's version is different from the original intent of the character. It's possible that specifically the Versus version of Noctis could be worked into Kingdom Hearts, as the original identity of Yozora that's been lost to darkness.

Verum Rex Could Be an Alternate World Insomnia

Kingdom Hearts Verum Rex

Past the connection between Yozora and Noctis, the entire world of Verum Rex could be an echo of Versus' city of Insomnia. The early footage of Versus XIII showed off a modern city that was clearly inspired by Tokyo, and this same style can be seen in the Verum Rex clip in Toy Box and the secret ending of Kingdom Hearts 3. By the end of ReMind Sora has ceased to exist, and he could have entered a "dreamlike" state. In Dream Drop Distance Sora and Riku have to enter dream worlds that have been lost to darkness, and the idea could be the same for the next game in the series.

The Night Sky Prince suggests that the entire world of Verum Rex could basically be a Nobody of Insomnia, or an alternate version of the city that was lost. The Versus XIII version of Insomnia never saw the light of day, as the entire project was canceled. Verum Rex could be a meta way of referencing how Versus XIII was lost to time, or it could even be a more direct representation. The world Insomnia notes an inability to sleep, and when worlds disappear from existence in Kingdom Hearts they become sleeping worlds. Sora traveling to Insomnia when he blinks out of existence and starts "dreaming" would make perfect sense.  No matter what, Kingdom Hearts is bringing back the idea of Versus XIII in some way.
