Project Nachtflugel is a Kingdom Hearts 3 mod that turns the secret boss, Yozora, into a fully playable character. Yozora first appeared in Kingdom Hearts 3 during the game’s Toy Story world, Toy Box, where Rex confuses Sora for a character named Yozora in his favorite video game, Verum Rex. A trailer for Verum Rex plays when Sora, Donald, and Goofy arrive at Toy Box for the first time. In the Kingdom Hearts 3 ReMind DLC, Yozora is revealed as a super boss at the end of the DLC’s Secret Episode. In one of the toughest fights in the series, players face an onslaught of Gigas mechs, duplications of Yozora, and lasers (both blockable and not). He can even steal Sora’s Keyblade and items to heal and revive himself.

The Kingdom Hearts 3 mod scene has been thriving since the game launched on PC last spring. Over 1,000 Kingdom Hearts 3 mods have been uploaded to the NexusMods site, changing the game in both major and minor ways. Modders have done things like give Sora a partner Pikachu Pokémon and restore the Olympus Coliseum from earlier games, among many other things.

Project Nachtflugel’s 1.0 version was recently uploaded to the Kingdom Hearts 3 Nexus Mods site by the user Ashura1756. This Yozora mod doesn’t just replace Sora’s character model but contains custom moves as well. Yozora’s combos and special moves featured in Kingdom Hearts 3's Secret Episode have taken the place of many of Sora’s base abilities, and smaller details such as title and game over screens have also been altered. Ashura1756’s post says that the mod is still a work in progress, for it is planned to be a long-term project with future additional updates.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Yozora Fight

Ashura1756 thanks and credits other modders for the mods that Project Nachtflugel was built upon. It is recommended that the Yozora mod be paired with the Kingdom Hearts Mod Loader to prevent crashes as well as the Improved Movement mod because Yozora’s running animation is faster than Sora’s normal running speed. Accompanied by the description on the site are several pictures of Yozora in action and a video of Yozora in the Toy Box mech mini-game Verum Rex: Best of Lead.

Project Nachflugel is one of Kingdom Hearts 3’s more extensive mods due to its scope and the amount of changes it makes to the base game. Yozora is one of, if not the, most challenging boss in the series, and throwing enemies around with his high damage dealing combos and spells looks like the perfect reward to fans who were killed countless times in the game’s Secret Episode. Yozora will be a key player in the Kingdom Hearts series going forward into its second phase as Sora is trapped in the Shibuya-like city of Quadratum. Fans can hope to hear more Kingdom Hearts news from the 20th anniversary Kingdom Hearts event happening in April.
