Warner Bros. unveils the official trailer for King Richard starring Will Smith as the father and coach of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams. Alongside Smith, the cast for the film includes Lovecraft Country's Aunjanue Ellis, The Punisher's Jon Bernthal, Saniyya Sidney, Demi Singleton, Tony Goldwyn and Dylan McDermott. The sports drama hails from Reinaldo Marcus Green, who directs on a script from Zach Baylin, who is also attached to pen the script for fellow genre project Creed III.

King Richard stars Smith as Richard Williams, the father of iconic athletes Venus and Serena Williams, and his work to raise the duo and their siblings while also putting them on their path to tennis superstardom. Development on the project was first announced in early 2019 when Smith signed on to the project and WB winning the bidding war for the rights to the film. After seeing its Los Angeles-based production hampered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film finally wrapped late last year and is gearing up to grace screens this November.

Having gone back into the world of blockbuster filmmaking over the past few years, it comes as a nice treat to see Smith return to the more awards-worthy fare that the biographical sports drama brings. Though 2015's Concussion was flawed in its execution, Smith delivered a strong leading performance, but his Oscar-nominated turn in Ali still stands as one of the best in his career. The first trailer for King Richard not only sets up the potential for him to get close to Oscar gold once again, but also brig the same level of tears as the Will and Jaden Smith-led The Pursuit of Happyness.

While the trailer may not see he and his children struggling in the same way as stockbroker Chris Gardner, the trailer for King Richard does point towards the titular character facing some major hurdles to give his family a better life. In addition to Smith, the rest of the cast look to be delivering strong performances, including up-and-comers Sidney and Singleton as Venus and Serena. Only time will tell if the film can capture Oscar gold when it arrives in theaters on November 19.
