Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Yes, That Really Was Young Jon Hamm

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 4, episode 3, "Party Monster: Scratching the Surface" features a very special guest star: a 25 year-old Jon Hamm, in a real clip from 1990s TV dating show The Big Date. In a break from Kimmy Schmidt's usual format, "Party Monster: Scratching the Surface" is a Making a Murderer-style mockumentary about a young and up-and-comer called DJ Fingablast, who is trying to find the perfect wedding DJ for his wedding to Hello Hadid, a fictional third Hadid sister.

DJ Fingablast decides he has to have his childhood hero DJ Slizzard a.k.a. Durnsville's Worst Wedding DJ a.k.a. Reverence Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, the man who kidnapped Kimmy and three other women and kept them locked in a bunker for 15 years. Upon discovering that his hero is in prison, DJ Fingablast makes an effort to prove Rev. RWGW's innocence (which turns out to be tricky, since he's not innocent).

While being visited in prison by DJ Fingablast, the Reverend tells a story about a "friend" of his who got a "sweet-ass butt cut" and then went on a dating show. The episode then shows a clip from the episode in which a young Jon Hamm (with his name tag edited to read "Richard") describes what he would do on a perfect first date. His plan is to "start off with some fabulous food. A little fabulous conversation. End it with a fabulous foot massage for an evening of total fabulosity."

Astonishingly, that line didn't manage to win the episode's eligible bachelorette over, and she instead went for his rival, Marc. "They got to go to the zoo together!" Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne laments. This unbearable rejection made Richard angry about the fact that women get to choose at all, which eventually resulted in him kidnapping women and locking them in a bunker, where they are forced to do what he says.

The Big Date was pretty short-lived, airing from 1996-1997, and Hamm appeared in episode 50. Hamm actually did end up finding love shortly afterwards, but in 2015 he split with his longtime partner, Jennifer Westfeldt. He's now single again, and last year told InStyle that being single is "hard" and "really sucks." Who knows, perhaps the USA Network can revive The Big Date for another season, and Hamm can return to find someone who's interested in "total fabulosity."

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 4 has been split into two parts, and while the first six episodes are now on Netflix, the second half won't arrive until January 25, 2019. Maybe when the show comes back, we'll discover more skeletons from Hamm's closet.
