Killing Eve season 3 arrives two weeks early a new trailer reveals. The spy thriller series, starring Sandra Oh as the titular Eve and Jodie Comer as the cold-blooded assassin Villanelle, first hit BBC America in 2018 and quickly developed a devoted following among critics and audiences alike. The second season arrived in 2019, simulcast on AMC, and continued the show’s run of critical praise, winning Oh a Golden Globe and Comer an Emmy.

When last fans saw Oh and Comer’s characters in season 2, their twisted relationship seemed to have come to an abrupt end in a Roman ruin as Villanelle put a bullet in Eve’s back. But of course Eve actually survived the shooting and will still be around for season 3 (as was already revealed in first look photos from the show). Teasers for the third season suggest a still living Eve has in fact found herself a new profession (probably not a bad move after her prior job as an MI6 agent caused her to get shot), while Villanelle is still in the assassin game – though her new clown disguise is a far cry from the high fashion looks she normally sports on the job.

Fans will find out what happens next for Eve and Villanelle two weeks sooner than expected, as Killing Eve season 3 has seen its premiere date on BBC America and AMC moved up to April 12, 2020. BBC America has also released a new season 3 trailer as well as a poster (via Killing Eve on Twitter), both of which can be seen in the space below:

The new trailer opens with Villanelle in the most unlikely place imaginable: blowing up balloons while dressed as a clown at a kids’ party. In voiceover, Villanelle talks about her “break up” with Eve – an interesting way to characterize a shooting - and insists she’s happier with Eve dead. But Villanelle’s blow-up at the kids suggests she’s not happy at all, and is still dealing with all sorts of anger issues. Later, her handler Konstantin (Kim Bodnia), who knows all about getting shot by Villanelle and surviving, lets her know that her “ex” Eve is in fact still alive, a piece of news his charge appears rather conflicted about. Soon enough, the cat and mouse game is back on between Villanelle and Eve.

Fans of the show will be unsurprised to see Villanelle and Eve quickly getting back to their old game once Eve is revealed to still be alive. The on-going chess match between the two lead characters is indeed the heart-and-soul of the show, and it would be a massive mistake to move too far away from the formula that has won the series so many devotees both in the general public and among critics. But no doubt, Killing Eve season 3 will also feature some unexpected twists and turns as the game continues to unfold. It will be interesting to see how much longer the show can keep wringing tension and drama from the dangerous connection between its two fascinatingly complex lead characters.
