New photos from the upcoming third season of Killing Eve reveal new jobs for the show's leads, a new character, and a 6-month time jump. Creator and showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge left the series after the first season to focus on her other projects and was replaced by writer Emerald Fennell who lead Killing Eve through a strong second season. Now, Suzanne Heathcote (Fear The Walking Dead) takes the reigns for season three.
The breathtaking season 2 finale ended with a literal bang after Eve (Sandra Oh) refused lovesick assassin Villanelle's (Jodie Comer) offer to run away to Alaska. As the MI6 agent turned to leave, she was shot in the back by her sometimes-lover. The show ends with Eve seemingly dead (or dying), as an unhinged Villanelle imagines a life they'll never have together. With Eve's life left in question and a slew of other complications to untangle, Killing Eve season 3 has tons of ground to cover in a mere eight episodes.
Some juicy details about Killing Eve season 3 appear in an Entertainment Weekly first-look, featuring nine, exclusive photos and quotes from the show's cast and writers. The biggest reveal is that Eve is alive when the story picks up six months after the events of season 2. She's quit her job at MI6 and is in the process of rediscovering herself. "She's also very, very good at making dumplings," executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle says. "And Sandra turns out to be incredibly good at making dumplings — and at butchering, actually." One of the images features Eve carving meat in a restaurant's kitchen, confirming Eve's a long way from her government operative days.
Meanwhile, Villanelle deals with "a lot of chaos" in her new life in Barcelona as she tries to "find her own way and be in charge and make her own rules," according to Comer. She ends up having to partner with a new character named Felix (Stefan Iancu), and the two go undercover as clowns. The article doesn't reveal any further information about the silly disguises (not a first for Villanelle). Still, Woodward Gentle added, "The question is, who is complicit, and why are they complicit?" That's not the only mystery the executive producer teased; when asked about a photo featuring Eve standing across from her old MI6 boss (Fiona Shaw), Woodward Gentle said, "I don't think they can help but be drawn back to each other a little bit."
A brief teaser for the new season was released on Valentine's Day via the Killing Eve Twitter account. The 15-second spot doesn't contain footage from the new season; instead, it begins with a stylized shot of Villanelle behind a sheer red fabric that shudders in a breeze. A few quick cuts of Eve flash by, and then the message "Happy V Day" appears, followed by the season 3 release date. While their relationship is undoubtedly volatile, the best parts of Killing Eve happen when Oh and Comer share the screen. It makes sense that they'll start season 3 in different places, but there's no doubt an emotional (and possibly bloody) reunion awaits when the show returns on April 26, 2020.
