From his creation of the iconic villain, Freddy Krueger, to his reinvention of the slasher genre with Scream, Wes Craven is routinely recognized as a master among horror aficionados. Despite his significant stature in the horror world, however, Craven hasn't written a film since 1994's New Nightmare. Luckily, that will all change in 2010 with the premiere of Wes Craven's newest film, My Soul to Take.

In typical Craven style, My Soul to Take involves a serial killer, the possibility of the supernatural, and presumably, a healthy amount of gore. Check below for the full synopsis of My Soul to Take courtesy of /Film.

In the sleepy town of Riverton, legend tells of a serial killer who swore he would return to murder the seven children born the night he died. Now, 16 years later, people are disappearing again. Has the psychopath been reincarnated as one of the seven teens, or did he survive the night he was left for dead? Only one of the kids knows the answer.

Adam “Bug” Heller (Max Thierot) was supposed to die on the bloody night his father went insane. Unaware of his dad’s terrifying crimes, he has been plagued by nightmares since he was a baby. But if Bug hopes to save his friends from the monster that’s returned, he must face an evil that won’t rest…until it finishes the job it began the day he was born.

Until October, My Soul to Take went by the working title of 25/8. Although there hasn't been a full trailer released, clips from the movie were shown at Comic-Con over the summer. Despite the Comic-Con footage, however, there haven't been any official pictures released for the film. Of course, that doesn't mean there aren't any unofficial pictures. If you scroll down, you will find a behind-the-scenes picture of the film's killer. Be warned however that the picture, along with its explanation, essentially amounts to a spoiler. If that doesn't bother you, then keep on scrolling.

So, there it is. If you feel somewhat let down, don't worry. This picture, which was clearly taken behind the scenes, comes from the MySpace page of stuntman Manny Siverio. For this reason, it is obvious that it is in no way meant to be a reflection of how this character will actually appear on film. If it helps make him scarier, imagine him stalking through the woods at night with a bloody knife in hand.

While somewhat unimpressive on its own, the story behind this picture is a bit more interesting. As /Film points out in their article, the "killer" seen in the picture was apparently not a part of the original film shoot. Citing a March news item from Shock Till You Drop, /Film recalls that Craven talked about the killer in the context of an additional shoot. They further speculate that this means Craven didn't originally intend to feature the killer, which, coupled with the synopsis above, could tell you a lot about the story.

Craven's full quote from STYD referencing an additional shoot can be found below.

"We had a talented storyboard artist. We were doing an additional shoot and I said to my wife Iya, who's the producer, I still don't quite know what the bad guy looks like. Let's get a conceptual artist. We [described] this is where the man comes from. He's kind of a figure who lives under the river, sleeps under the bridges, deep in the woods - he's been that way for sixteen years. Eats bark. And [the artist] came back the next day with this fabulous rendering he did in Photoshop. Everybody sparked off of that and all of the special effects makeup artists started to pool around it."

So what does this all mean? As far as I can tell, Craven may have had some twist in the works for the movie that has unintentionally been pieced together. On the other hand, all we really have to go off is a set picture and some quotes from seven months ago. The way I see it, since this is the first time Craven's been the writer and director of a film in over 15 years, horror fans will be jostling for seats no matter what.

What do you think? Does the killer look cool? Do you think the picture and the synopsis give too much of the story away?
