September 2011 is looking like a pretty solid month, as far as action flicks go. First we'll be getting Steven Soderbergh's virus thriller, Contagion, followed by Nicolas Winding Refn's Noir thriller, Drive - and then, co-writer/director Gary McKendry's assassin thriller, Killer Elite.
New clips and TV spots have been released for McKendry's film - which, for the record, has nothing to do with Sam Peckinpah's 1975 film, The Killer Elite - which tease more of the intense action and slick thrills promised by the previous Killer Elite clips and trailers.
Killer Elite is based on Ranulph Fiennes book 'The Feather Men," which concerns the real-life British Elite Special Air Service. McKendry's adaptation partially refashions Fiennes' source material as more an international thrill ride, with Jason Statham, Robert De Niro, and Clive Owen playing the leads.
Here is an official synopsis for the film:
Based on a shocking true story, 'Killer Elite' pits two of the world's most elite operatives – Danny, an ex-special ops agent (Statham) and Hunter, his longtime mentor (De Niro) – against the cunning leader of a secret military society (Owen). Covering the globe from Australia to Paris, London and the Middle East, Danny and Hunter are plunged into a highly dangerous game of cat and mouse — where the predators become the prey.
Clips have been released from two cooly-lit chase sequences - one with Statham and Owen driving foreign-model cars, the other featuring the pair navigating rooftops on foot - that offer an early taste of that "cat and mouse" game in Killer Elite. Both are pretty rockin', to say the least.

There are few actors (if any) who can sell bone-crunching stunts and martial arts maneuvers like Statham, and his turn in Killer Elite looks to be no exception. Owen should serve as a good opponent - one not quite as physically-capable as Statham, but still pretty cunning and tough on his own. Plus, the mustache is always a nice touch, as far as being a villain goes.
For more of Statham pulling off incredible maneuvers (including a Jackie Chan-style flip that involves a chair) and De Niro, who appears to be having even more fun than he did in Limitless earlier this year, check out the recent Killer Elite TV spots below:
We've already seen one Statham thriller this year (The Mechanic), but Killer Elite looks like it should be more of a fun time, especially with the likes of De Niro and Owen involved. The supporting cast doesn't look to disappoint either, with solid additions like Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (The Bourne Identity, Lost), Dominic Purcell (Prison Break, Equilibrium) and lovely Chuck starlet Yvonne Strahovski rounding out the acting team.
Killer Elite will shoot its way into U.S. theaters on September 23rd, 2011.
