The Kid Detective trailer shows Adam Brody trying to solve a murder mystery. Written and directed by Evan Morgan, in his feature-length directorial debut, The Kid Detective is centered around Abe Applebaum (Brody). A celebrated private investigator in his youth, Abe finds himself stuck in a rut as he continues to solve the childish mysteries even though he’s now in his thirties. Battling hangovers and moments of self-pity, Abe gets a chance to prove himself when he’s hired for his adult first case by a naive client (played by Sophie Nélisse) who wants to know who murdered her boyfriend.

Although he’s well-known for his memorable turns in teen dramas like Gilmore Girls and The OC, some of Brody’s best performances have occurred on the big screen when he’s played against type. His lead role in the 2013 dramedy Some Girl(s) featured the actor as a successful writer with a few skeletons in his closet. More recently, in Ready or Not, Brody turned heads for his portrayal of a conflicted but good-hearted brother-in-law. The Kid Detective looks to continue that trend, as Abe moves between reliving his glory days and attempting to move forward with his life. The movie begins with an interesting premise. For fans of young protagonists in the mystery and crime-solving genre, the film might be reminiscent of Veronica Mars. What makes The Kid Detective stand out, however, is that it asks the question of what would happen if that young protagonist never fully grew up. When it was recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, the satirical drama was met with positive reviews and earned comparisons to Rian Johnson’s inventive noir film Brick.

The Kid Detective's synopsis reads as follows: A once-celebrated kid detective, now 31, continues to solve the same trivial mysteries between hangovers and bout of self-pity. Until a naïve client brings him his first ‘adult’ case - to find out who brutally murdered her boyfriend.
