Mark Millar certainly likes to talk big - but that doesn't mean everything (or even most of what) he says is always true.
The more egregious examples of the Wanted and Kick-Ass comic book writer-turned-producer making bold claims that amounted to nothing include: his comments about A-listers like Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp being pursued for the (currently stalled) Nemesis adaptation, and virtually everything he's said to date about the followup to Matthew Vaughn's film adaptation of the Kick-Ass comic, titled Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall.
In a recent interview with the Daily Record, Millar claimed that Kick-Ass 2 is now gearing up to begin shooting by Summer 2012. However, given the way he tends to casually throw around the word "we" in the interview, it's difficult to assess whether Millar is also saying that Matthew Vaughn will be directing the Kick-Ass sequel after all - along with an adaptation of Millar's American Jesus comic - or if he's referring to another filmmaker being set for the project.
Kick-Ass co-writer Jane Goldman has already made it known that Vaughn is looking to pass off co-writing and directing duties on Balls to the Wall to someone else. Vaughn has recently committed to directing X-Men: First Class 2 (a project that is being fast-tracked for production), which likewise puts a damper on speculation that he might try and slip Kick-Ass 2 into his work schedule, before rolling cameras on the next installment in the rebooted X-Men franchise.
However, it is a fact that Vaughn owns the screen rights to both Millar's Superior and The Secret Service comics - the latter of which Vaughn is credited as co-conceiver on and Millar describes as "a neddy James Bond... [or rather] 'My Fair Lady' meets James Bond" (take THAT as you will). So Vaughn has dibs on film adaptations of both titles, should they begin to make serious progress in the future.
That's all to say: until someone other than Millar offers more information about the status of Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall, it's probably best to consider the possibility of the sequel actually happening in the near future to be as ridiculous as... well, that title.
As always, we'll keep you posted.
