Marvel's Kevin Feige has confirmed that Phase 4 will take the MCU in a more cosmic direction with a movie based on The Eternals, a race of superpowered cosmic beings. The MCU is currently focused on wrapping up Phase 3 starting with this week's Avengers: Infinity War, but has an eye on the future of the franchise too.
The Eternals were created in 1976 by Jack Kirby, making their first appearance in Eternals #1. Created by the cosmic celestials, the Eternals are an offshoot of humanity who had their evolution accelerated. The race eventually took to the cosmos making their home on Titan, one of the moons of Saturn. Marvel technically introduced the Eternals to the MCU last year in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2 with Ego, Peter Quill's father. Now, it seems the property is getting the full blown MCU movie treatment.
Feige confirmed as much to The Wrap when he revealed that Eternals is one of the "many many things we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about to see if we believe in them enough to put them on a slate." Feige confirmed that the Eternals are up for consideration while promoting Avengers: Infinity War this week, saying the studio is having active conversations about the MCU films they want to tackle in the future:
“Those are the five things that are taking up 90 percent of our time, But there’s 10 percent we’re starting to go, ‘What’s going to be best?’ And some of that is you can take cues from everything we’ve done in the 22 movies before those - which is sequels to existing characters, new interpretation of existing characters and trying whole new swings with stuff that most people never heard of. So there are writers coming in on lots of different projects and lots of different ideas. And you’ll only start to hear more and more of it.”
For the time being, Marvel Studios' priority is wrapping up Phase 3 with Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Infinity War and the untitled Avengers 4. According to Feige, the studio will also start shooting the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel in July, making it a busy summer for the House of Ideas. There are rumors circulating about the direction that an Eternals movie could take, however, lending further credence to any creative discussions.
There are a number of different directions that Marvel could go for their fourth phase of movies. Speculation about where Marvel is taking the MCU from this point has involved everything from alternate realities to television crossovers, but the future of the 14 billion dollar franchise remains a mystery. Some might argue, however, that in the wake of Ava DuVernay's New Gods film, The Eternals might be trying to cash in on some of the movie's build up when it comes to adapting unusual Jack Kirby properties and little-known characters.
Still, moving the MCU further into outer space and tackling more cosmic storylines sounds like a smart move for the franchise, building off the success of the Guardians of the Galaxy series and the excitement around Captain Marvel. Every MCU character, from Black Panther to whoever is still part of the Avengers post-Infinity War, should have an opportunity to travel to the stars. A movie about a new race of beings, like The Eternals, is a perfect opportunity for them to do just that.
