Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, recently teased the important impact that Eternals is going to have on the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward. When it premiered, Eternals introduced a plethora of new super-powered characters to the MCU, such as Sersi (Gemma Chan), Ikaris (Richard Madden), Thena (Angelina Jolie), and Ajak (Salma Hayek), along with new threats in the form of the alien Deviants. The Eternals team defied the orders of their creator, Arishem (voiced by David Kaye), a powerful world-creating Celestial, by stopping the Emergence of a different Celestial, Tiamut, from the Earth. Angry at the sacrifice of a Celestial in exchange for a planet, Arishem is preparing to judge whether or not the actions of the Eternals were justified at the film's end.

While the Eternals are responsible for angering Arishem, who may prove to be a powerful threat to Earth, the Eternals are also thousands of years old, perhaps making them the most well-suited to deal with that threat. Eternals revealed that the group was present during the early days of humanity, helping human beings evolve and advance toward the modern day. Their wide-ranging knowledge of history and possible threats beyond even the scope of the Avengers means that the Eternals are going to be important going forward in the MCU, and now the head of Marvel Studios has confirmed that fact.

In a recent behind-the-scenes clip, Feige discussed the making of Eternals and its lasting impact on the MCU. The Direct highlighted comments he made regarding the centuries-spanning characters and their role in the franchise going forward. Although Feige did not get into specifics about what the Eternals will be up to next, he did tease that they’ll be crucial in the future. See what Feige said below:

“The impact the Eternals will have on the MCU will be nothing less than redefining the Cinematic Universe entirely.”

The Eternals standing on an open field

With Feige having a sense of everything that’s going on behind the scenes regarding the MCU, his claim that the Eternals are going to be important enough to lead to the franchise’s re-definition is noteworthy. While other movies in the MCU’s roster, such as Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain Marvel, seemed like the true origin stories of the MCU, it now seems that Eternals is the closest to the franchise’s true origin. The Eternals' non-intervention stance just kept them behind the scenes and out of the public eye this whole time.

With all kinds of new threats coming the current MCU heroes’ way, the Avengers may need to seek out the Eternals for help at some point. While Arishem could pose a threat later, antagonists from the multiverse, which is about to play a huge role in the upcoming Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, may require help from the Eternals. Although there’s been no official word on when the heroes introduced in Eternals will show up in the MCU next, there’s little doubt that with Feige’s claim in mind, they're going to have an important future role to play.
