Kevin Feige: Captain Marvel Will Benefit from Wonder Woman Success

With Wonder Woman debuting to critical acclaim, Kevin Feige thinks that Marvel will profit on Captain Marvel from the Amazonian's reception.

Captain Marvel is still quite a way from flying into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Kevin Feige isn't phased by the Avengers first solo female-led film - especially given that Wonder Woman has clearly shown that a female hero is nothing to be afraid of. In fact, Feige thinks Marvel will profit from the Amazonian's recent success. Marvel might be playing catch-up to DC in terms of getting a female hero their own film, but Feige isn't worried.

Speaking to the press, Feige noted that Marvel's plans for Captain Marvel have been in the works for a while, and they've put a lot of effort into them. Still, in his mind, he would've have been worried about the success of Carol Danvers' first outing into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even if Wonder Woman's global box office performance (coupled with its strong critical reception )hadn't been as impressive as it has been.

Feige also noted that there are characters and movies that Marvel hasn't announced yet that are very much planned for the future, during his related interview with Mashable:

"Well, for us, you know, our Captain Marvel plans have been set for a long time and a lot of things we're doing with the characters in the announced movies and what we have planned in the movies we haven't announced yet have all been pretty set. Because what the question would have been on this junket before that is, 'Do you think people want to see a female superhero movie? Do you think audiences are ready to go see a big ... Are you nervous about Captain Marvel being a big, the first female hero?'

And I would always say no, because there hasn't been a good one in a long time. There were, you know, 15 years ago, a bunch of bad ones. Did they fail because they were female lead movies? No. They failed because they were not good movies. I don't have to say that anymore. Thanks to Wonder Woman. Because it just blows that fallacy out of the water."

Captain Marvel will of course be played by Brie Larson, and will begin filming in January 2018. There are rumors that she will appear in Infinity War, though her solo movie is slated to focus more on her origins. We've already gotten to see some official concept art of Captain Marvel in costume in the MCU, and fans of the comic-book should very much be pleased - as it's similar to the MCU Captain America uniform, but a little more heavily-armored.

The attitude heading into Captain Marvel certainly seems hopeful, even more so after the wild success of Wonder Woman both critically and at the box office. We've still got at least a year, if not longer, before we even get to see any footage of Carol Danvers' live-action debut, but it sounds like it should be worth the wait.
