Actor Kevin Costner makes his return to directing with his new project, Horizon. Costner’s last directorial job was almost 20 years ago, in 2003, for Open Range. He has mostly been focusing on acting since. Costner is currently best known for his performance in the hit series Yellowstone, which has led him and his castmates to recently be nominated by the Screen Actors Guild for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Costner has a history of directing and acting in American Westerns and continues this trend with Horizon. He will be directing as well as producing and financing the project through his production company, Territory Studios. Horizon is set to begin filming on August 29. The film has long been in development for Costner while he focused on the incredibly popular Yellowstone. Horizon is set over the course of 15 years, following characters both before and after the Civil War and settlement of the American West. Costner suggests that the project will have tense themes, telling The Wrap that it highlights the “consequences of the characters’ life and death decisions.
