The new multiplayer portion of Kerbal Space Program 2 will let players work together to reach the stars or compete in a simulated space race. The original space flight simulator, created by indie developer Squad, puts players in charge of a space program staffed by quirky green aliens called Kerbals. The upcoming Kerbal Space Program 2 will add a multiplayer mode to the mix, and this exciting feature promises to totally change the game.

In a recent PC Gamer interview Kerbal Space Program 2 director Nate Simpson revealed some key details about the title's brand-new multiplayer mode. The space flight simulator will introduce Agencies, which will let groups of players work together to meet design goals and achieve flight. The multiplayer mechanic can be competitive, too, with different Agencies setting up in various locations around the map and competing to build the superior rocket. This will essentially lead to a Kerbal space race, though hopefully without any real-world political ramifications. Kerbal Space Program 2 will launch in early access in February 2023, with additional features like multiplayer and interstellar travel being part of a post-launch content roadmap.

Kerbal Space Program 2 Will Be Fun With Friends

While the sequel's core gameplay is expected to remain largely unchanged, a Kerbal Space Program 2 character redesign promises to make each flight more fun whether it's successful or not. The adorable Kerbals helped the first game stand out from other space simulators, and they'll look better than ever in the sequel thanks to enhanced graphics and improved animations. These innovations will give each green alien a wider range of emotions as they respond to their current situation, whether it be glorious or dire, and g-forces will affect them in more noticeable ways. These improvements should inject more personality into Kerbal Space Program 2 and ensure that every flight attempt is hilariously dramatic.

The alien space flight sequel was originally meant to launch in 2020, but a Kerbal Space Program 2 delay has sadly pushed the game into next year. The project was originally in development at a studio called Star Theory, with the original game's developer Squad still focusing on updates for that game. However, eventually a new developer called Intercept Games was created to handle the sequel instead. Thankfully development now seems to be running smoothly, with Kerbal Space Program 2 remaining on schedule for a 2023 liftoff.

Kerbal Space Program 2 promises to be a robust solo experience, but the sequel's multiplayer mode also sounds incredibly fun and unique. With multiple groups of players scrambling to outbuild the competition, the cartoonish space race will no doubt lead to impressive takeoffs and devastating explosions. Kerbal Space Program 2 is set to launch on February 24, 2023 as an early access game, with multiplayer Agencies arriving further down the road.
