Rumors to the contrary, Dwayne Johnson says that Keanu Reeves is NOT in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, but that the pair have been talking about working together in the future. Eighteen years into its run, the Fast & Furious franchise is finally getting its first spinoff with this summer's Hobbs & Shaw. The movie follows Johnson's Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw - who joined the series in Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 (well, its credits scene), respectively - as they're forced to work together and stop a cyber-genetically enhanced terrorist (Idris Elba) from unleashing chaos upon the world.
Back in April, the rumor started circulating that Reeves has a secret role in Hobbs & Shaw that sets the stage for him to return in a greater capacity in future Fast & Furious sequels. Naturally, fans were excited by the idea of The Matrix and John Wick star sharing the screen with Johnson, Statham, Elba and the remainder of the Hobbs & Shaw crew in their upcoming adventure. Unfortunately, The Rock claims that it's a rumor and nothing more... though, that doesn't mean Reeves won't end up joining the Fast & Furious family at some point in the future.
Speaking to MTV News, Johnson confirmed that "Keanu and I have been texting each other", but clarified that he doesn't have a role in Hobbs & Shaw. All the same, The Rock affirmed that he and Reeves are talking about ways that the pair could end up working together, be it on the Fast & Furious series or something else entirely.
All thing considered, Reeves seems like (arguably) a perfect match for the Fast & Furious series. The franchise has evolved into one of the go-to properties for A-listers like him, with everyone from The Rock to Luke Evans, Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren, and John Cena - on the upcoming Fast & Furious 9 - having signed on for a role over the last ten years. It would also play to his strengths as a soulful action movie star who specializes in practical stunts, and could even potentially reunite Reeves with his original John Wick co-director, David Leitch (who called the shots on Hobbs & Shaw). The Rock has made it clear that he wants Hobbs & Shaw to be successful enough to get a sequel green-lit, and adding Reeves to the mix would not only allow the pair to work together, but also immediately heighten anticipation for Hobbs & Shaw 2 in general.
Of course, given how busy The Rock is, there are plenty of other developing projects that he and Reeves could team up for. Nevertheless, a Hobbs & Shaw sequel or something else Fast & Furious-related feels like the perfect vehicle for the pair, and would make for a welcome addition to the ongoing Reeves-aissance of movies, TV shows, and even video games featuring the actor. So here's to hoping that the two can make something happen, sooner rather than later.
