It seems that Keanu Reeves has made a sort of comeback, although the actor never really went away. In 2019 he's everywhere: on YouTube answering questions and petting puppies, trending weekly on social media for fun and funny reasons, kicking ass as John Wick, stealing scenes in Toy Story 4, and playing himself on Netflix. Perhaps the actor's most surprise appearance to date, though, happened at Xbox's E3 2019 press conference: Reeves came onstage after it was revealed he would appear in CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077.
Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most anticipated video games of the decade. Its inspiration comes from a 1980s tabletop roleplaying game called Cyberpunk inspired by the novel Hardwired by Walter Jon Williams. The game's setting is futuristic, a world where humans have become obsessed with cybernetic mutation. A later edition of the tabletop game, Cyberpunk 2020, released in 1990. This is the version of the game that inspired CD Projekt Red to create Cyberpunk 2077.
Why is this important? Because Reeves' character in Cyberpunk 2077 comes directly from Cyberpunk 2020. Reeves will portray Johnny Silverhand. In Cyberpunk 2020, Silverhand belongs to a character class called Rockerboys, which are the game's version of futuristic bards who are the poets and rebels. Silverhand's most iconic feature is a shiny silver arm, which Reeves sports in the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer. The trailer shows the player's character involved in a deal that goes bad, leaving that character to wake up in a junkyard. Silverhand, as Reeves, shows up to reboot the character telling him, "we have a city to burn."
The reveal of Reeves' involvement in the game already highlights what is, potentially, the biggest E3 for CD Projekt Red. Not only did gamers finally get more details about the upcoming game, but they also finally got an official release date: April 16, 2020. Although some hoped to see the game get a 2019 launch, CD Projekt Red is known for taking time with its titles, and fans know that those games are worth the wait. This is the team behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a game that still gets a lot of attention, particularly now that The Witcher 3 will potentially arrive on the Nintendo Switch sometime soon.
For fans already excited about the release of Cyberpunk 2077, Reeves' appearance in the game is just the cherry on top. One fan, in particular, got so excited and yelled out during the conference that Reeves was "breathtaking," and as a result ended up with a free copy of Cyberpunk 2077 when it releases. It's understandable: seeing Reeves in a video game is enough to make most players lose their minds.
