Karen Gillan as Nebula Complains About Thanos In Hysterically Thick Essex Accent

Nebula has unleashed on Thanos the full force of her frustration, and a strong Essex accent, in a new Instagram video posted by Karen Gillan. The Scottish actress rose to fame as companion Amy Pond on Doctor Who. She soon made the jump to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy. She later reprised the role in the sequel, as well as Avengers: Infinity War and, most recently, Avengers: Endgame.

As the adopted daughter of intergalactic warlord Thanos (Josh Brolin) and adopted sister of Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Nebula hasn't had the easiest of lives. Trained from an early age to be an assassin for Thanos, Nebula grew to form a bond with Gamora. However, Nebula’s love for her sister turned to hate when they were forced by Thanos to spar, and since Gamora was the superior fighter, Nebula always lost. This led Thanos to replace parts of her with cybernetics after each defeat. Over the course of the films, however, Nebula managed to rediscover her humanity, ultimately teaming with the Avengers in their fight against Thanos.

In the wake of the film's release and huge success, Gillan has posted a video on her personal Instagram account. In full make-up and prosthetics, Gillan recorded a video-diary from Nebula directed at her abusive father. Rather than using Nebula's usual voice, however, Gillan opted to go full-on British reality TV, hilariously unleashing Nebula's tirade in a thick Essex accent. Check it out below:

This particular blend of genres is surprisingly fitting. If you strip away the various sci-fi, magical, and otherwise cosmic elements and the interpersonal dynamics, relationships and family drama of comic-book movies would be right at home on a soap opera or reality TV. Some British slang terms may go over some fans' heads, but the context is clear. Nebula just wants to live her life and is sick of being second best to Gamora.

Gillan isn't the first Marvel star to channel such an accent. Chris Pratt previously demonstrated his own Essex accent on The Graham Norton Show in the U.K. (Pratt also recently shared a behind-the-scenes video). This is the first time, however, that is has been utilized in character - albeit behind the scenes. What provoked Gillan to record such a video is unknown, but fans are already reveling in the hilarity. Even co-star Saldana and director James Gunn have responded positively to the skit, which has already had over a million views.

The comedically-talented Gillan has a few films in the pipeline. As well as a part in the upcoming Gunpower Milkshake, she will reprise the role of Martha/Ruby Roundhouse alongside Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in Jumanji 3Where Nebula goes from here, however, remains to be seen, though she will likely be a part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3Whatever the case, fans will no doubt enjoy the chance to enjoy a little levity after the various emotional devastations inflicted by Avengers: Endgame
