Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Karen Gillan hopes that her character Nebula can resolve her daddy issues with the Mad Titan Thanos himself (Josh Brolin) by Avengers 4.
Since Thanos first appeared in 2012's The Avengers, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and company have been teasing the impending showdown between Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Mad Titan. The many MCU movies to date have been connected through the appearance of the Infinity Stones, complex family trees, and even the odd appearance of Thanos himself, but arguably, no one has more of a grudge to bear again him than his "daughters", Nebula and Gamora.
Arriving on the scene as a secondary villain in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, Nebula has since softened into more of an anti-hero. However, while speaking to Cinema Blend, Gillan reminded fans that revenge is a dish best served cold for her blue warrior counterpart:
"I hope that she can somehow face her daddy issues head on, and make some progress with those [by Avengers 4]. That's what I'm hoping for. I actually don't know what happens in the end."
Nebula could've been just a one-shot villain in Disney's expanding world of heroes and villains, but this year's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 added layer upon layer to her backstory and complicated relationship with Zoe Saldana's Gamora. Gunn's sequel revealed that Thanos constantly forced the two sisters to fight, replacing Nebula's body parts with machinery whenever she lost. This might explain the physically and mentally scarred version that we see today, so you can't blame Nebula for being a little peeved.
Interestingly, Gillan's comments about not knowing what happens in the end proves that the MCU is keeping a tight lock on the end of Phase 3. While it may be some sort of Star Wars poetry to see Nebula topple her vindictive father, it would probably be an even bigger twist to see her just miss out on her own goal. So far, there have been few major deaths of fan-favorite characters, so cutting Nebula down just before the end would be one heck of a way to close Avengers 4. Given that the first Infinity War trailer was minus Gillan's crotchety cyborg, it is certainly teasing that she is in for quite the showdown with daddy dearest.
As it stands, Nebula is a relatively minor player compared to the combined might of the Avengers and its ever-changing roster. Surely it will take more than the might of just a daughter scorned to finish Thanos off for good? However, we do expect the next two Avengers movies will see his fall from grace. Whatever happens, expect a disgruntled daughter riddled with daddy issues to be the least of Thanos' problems when he comes face-to-face with heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor in Avengers: Infinity War next year.
