The upcoming premiere of The Kardashians promises to show a whole new side to the family, including unpacking the endless train of family trauma. The betrayals seem to keep stacking up for the Kar-Jenners. Hulu looks like the place where the family will dig deep and address some of the trauma they've faced over the years. There have been numerous relationship malfunctions for the family to manage during filming, and a clip in the new show's trailer hinted they would address it all.

Messy relationships defined The Kardashians' media journey from day one with Scott Disick and Kourtney Kardashian. Before Kourtney Kardashian's marriage to Travis Barker, she briefly contemplated a reunion with Scott Disick. When Scott broached the topic, she said, on Keeping Up With The Kardashians, "That's a lot of pressure. Can I get back to you?" Ultimately, Kourtney made clear to her family and the audience that there were specific steps Scott would need to take that he was well aware of for a romantic relationship to even be a possibility. With a history of alcohol and substance abuse, cheating, and a tendency to go rogue, Kourtney faced a lot of trauma with Scott. Then came endless Tristan Thompson cheating scandals, Kanye West's provocative and unfiltered media campaigns, and Caitlyn Jenner's blatant criticism of Kris Jenner after Caitlyn's transition. There's a lot to unpack, not to mention the less public but tumultuous relationship between Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott.

All of this left Khloe Kardashian asking, in The Kardashians trailer, "Why are we always making excuses for the people that traumatize us?" She posed the question surrounded by Kim, Kourtney, Kendall Jenner, and Kylie in The Kardashians trailer. The clip played directly after another where Kim admitted things were very difficult with Kanye. Being the bigger person has been Kim's modus operandi with Kanye. Similarly, Kourtney and Khloe always chose to primarily ignore Scott and Tristan's bad behavior rather than be reactive. Khloe's question brings up whether playing it cool for their own sake, their family, or the pressure of the spotlight is always the right choice.

Kris Jenner was the most reactive to Caitlyn's negative public commentary about her. It's likely that in the present moment Khloe is speaking about Kanye's mistreatment of Kim or Tristan's lies about fathering Maralee Nichols' child. With her history with Lamar Odam, Khloe knows all about protecting a partner who has traumatized her. The Kardashians put their best foot forward and look out for everyone they love. However, the sentiment isn't consistently reciprocated. Only Jordyn Woods was on the receiving end of their frustrations, which many fans called out as problematic. However, if The Kardashians were as comfortable calling out the men in their life as they were with Jordyn, the reaction to her may not have seemed as glaringly one-sided.

Time will tell what Khloe's statement actually refers to. It's not hard to connect the dots. The Astroworld tragedy, Tristan's endless manipulation tactics and deceit, and Kanye's public displays of discontent paint a big picture of the trauma the Kardashian-Jenners get exposed to at no fault of their own. If the family truly intends to be more open and honest than ever before, The Kardashians should answer all these questions and then some.
