Loki director Kate Herron has recently teased Kang the Conqueror's future within the MCU. Debuting in 2021, the third MCU Phase Four series followed the events of Avengers: Endgame after the titular character escaped New York using the Tesseract. He was quickly captured by the Time Variance Authority as an unauthorized variant and was forced to work with the secretive organization to track down one of his own variants who is wreaking havoc on the timeline and killing TVA agents. However, upon meeting the variant Slyvie (Sophia Di Martino), Loki elects to help her track down the Time-Keepers behind the TVA and save their lives.

The series proved popular with both critics and audiences alike with the actor's performances singled out as exemplary. One such actor praised was Jonathan Majors who briefly portrayed the mysterious man behind the curtain, He Who Remains, in the Loki season finale. Majors' slightly giddy performance contrasted the gravity of the scene where he explained to the heroes that he created the TVA in an effort to save the universe from another devastating multiversal war that his variants started. By pruning the timelines, they avoid the possibility of a catastrophic disaster across space and time. However, Sylvie kills the time lord setting the MCU down a collision course with one of He Who Remains' most powerful variants, Kang the Conqueror.

The Playlist caught up with Herron, who discussed her experience working on the popular MCU show Loki. When asked about working with Majors, the director shared that it was a pleasure to see him develop the character and teased that audiences will see more of Kang the Conqueror in the future. Read what Herron said below.

"So it was amazing working with [Majors]. He is a fantastic actor and it honestly felt a little bit like filming a play. Which was really fun. That was the thing. It was such a privilege seeing an incredible actor find this character because it is going to go on to be an amazing character."

He Who Remains in Loki and Kang the Conqueror in Marvel Comics

Upon returning from the Citadel at the End of Time following Sylvie's slaying of He Who Remains, Loki finds himself in a transformed TVA that no longer remembers him and is controlled by another variant of He Who Remains that bears a resemblance to Kang the Conqueror. Majors is set to properly introduce the villain in the upcoming 2023 Marvel movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. However, it is unknown how many other movies or shows within the MCU Kang will make an appearance in.

The Loki series set up the MCU's next chapter as one that will cross through varying universes and traverse through time. Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness both dealt with the complexities of the multiverse within the superhero franchise. With the Loki series lighting the fuse that will lead to Kang sparking a multiversal war, it is possible that he will be the next Thanos-sized villain that the heroes of Earth-616 must take on to save their universe's existence. Only time will tell what the MCU has in store for Kang, but audiences must wait for Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania in February for the character's return.
