Rick & Morty co-creator Justin Roiland has just been dropped from both his Hulu series, Solar Opposites and Koala Man. The Adult Swim animated program Ricky & Morty, which Roiland co-created with Dan Harmon, has become an enormous success after it premiered in December 2013. In addition to being one of the driving creative forces behind the multimillion-dollar franchise, Roiland also voices both the title characters. However, he was removed from the show following domestic violence charges for an incident taking place in January 2020.

Per Variety, Hulu has followed suit and dropped Roiland from the animated series Solar Opposites and Koala Man. Both series were collaborations between Hulu and 20th Century Animation, who said in a joint statement that they have “ended [their] association” with the creator. Solar Opposites, which was co-created by and stars Roiland, is a sci-fi comedy that premiered in 2020 and has already been renewed for an upcoming season 4 and 5. Koala Man, an Australian alternate universe series, just premiered this January, but it only features Roiland as an executive producer and guest star.

Roiland's domestic abuse allegations first publicly surfaced earlier this month. The Rick & Morty creator was charged with felony domestic violence and false imprisonment that took place on or around January 19, 2020. The criminal complaint was originally filed in May 2020 and there were over a dozen hearings after Roiland pled not guilty. Another hearing is set for April 27 to continue settling the matter, which Roiland's attorney says "is on course to be dismissed once the District Attorney’s office has completed its methodical review of the evidence."

While the legal situation is still ongoing, Adult Swim cut ties with Roiland yesterday, announcing that the show would be continuing and that the crew is hard at work on Rick & Morty season 7. Roiland will be recast as both title characters, the naïve 14-year-old Morty and his mad scientist grandfather Rick. Harmon (who also co-created Community and has his own controversies following 2018 allegations of sexual misconduct, for which he apologized on his podcast Harmontown) will now be credited as the sole showrunner of the series.

So far, it is unknown if Hulu and 20th Century Animation will take this same route when dealing with Roiland's absence from their pair of animated series. His ties to Koala Man are less tight than with Rick & Morty, so that show should be able to continue largely unencumbered. However, Solar Opposites season 4 is likely also looking to recast its lead and may follow Adult Swim's lead by solely crediting Roiland's co-creator Mike McMahan.
