WARNING: This article features spoilers from the new DC animated movie, Justice Society: World War II.

Justice Society: World War II not only gives the Justice Society of America their own animated adventure, but pulls a twist for Barry Allen's journey in the new film. One of DC Comics' most beloved superhero teams, besides the Justice League, is the Golden Age team of heroes, the Justice Society of America. Depending on the incarnation, the Justice Society is usually the 1940s superhero group that pre-dates Justice League. In other iterations, the JSA are the defenders of Earth-2, as a counterpart to the prime DC Universe. While the JSA has been depicted in animation several times, Justice Society: World War II is the first time they are starring in their own solo adventure.

Initially, Justice Society: World War II made it seem like that Barry, a.k.a. The Flash, would meet the group by accidentally traveling back in time to the 1940s. While the animated feature initially does seem to indicate that Flash has time-traveled to the events of World War II, things weren't that simple. When Barry runs into Clark Kent, who he recognizes as Superman, The Flash doesn't get the response that he was expecting. As Clark has no idea what Superman is, The Flash begins to realize that he didn't travel into the past by mistake; he has traveled to an alternative Earth.

There is also the notion that Barry had no idea who the Justice Society of America was when he initially encountered them. While Justice Society: World War II almost made it seem that the future never learns of the team, it instantly made sense once Barry discovered that he had crossed over to Earth-2. Given that The Flash traveled to another reality by mistake, this is still a version of Barry discovering the range of his powers. It is through Jay Garrick that The Flash learns about the concept of the Speed Force.

Justice Society World War II animated cast

Since Superman: Man of Tomorrow, a new animated shared DC Universe is taking shape, with Justice Society: World War II continuing it. But the fact that the second film in this new franchise is already introducing the Multiverse indicates that they're not holding back on their worldbuilding. Even though Barry went back to his Earth (presumably being regarded as Earth-1 or Earth-Prime), this is likely not the final Multiverse story they will do in the new shared universe. Interesting enough, this is also the first time since Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox that The Flash has been at the center of a story. But for the franchise to have its second film involve the Multiverse, is a significant deal.

Batman: The Long Halloween - Part 1 is the next installment in DC's fresh animated universe, with Batman: The Long Halloween - Part 2 likely coming sometime after it. It's refreshing to see how Warner Bros. is tackling their DC animated properties, especially for a shared universe. It does seem that they are going with solo films, while also having other heroes pop up in each other's stories, like Superman and The Flash bonding in Justice Society: World War II. But with the arrival of the JSA as part of Earth-2, Justice Society: World War II is hopefully not the last time fans have seen them in this iteration, especially after the twist with how Barry Allen actually ended up meeting them.
