It's been revealed that Zack Snyder's Justice League will end on a cliffhanger that's likely to never be resolved, but it's a necessary evil. In some ways, the very fact that the Snyder Cut is actually coming out feels like a minor miracle. For a long time, there was doubt that such a cut even existed. Once that was resolved, it didn't seem like Warner Bros. had any plans to release it, generally avoiding the topic when asked about it by fans or the media.

If Warner Media hadn't decided to create the HBO Max streaming service, one wonders if the Snyder Cut would have remained out of reach, at least for a while longer. As it is though, Warner Media has already sunk a lot of capital into HBO Max, and wants it to grow into one of the most popular streaming options out there. To do that, they need the service to have big exclusive content, and Zack Snyder's Justice League more than fits that bill.

Unfortunately for those upset that Snyder never got to truly realize his creative vision for the DCEU, all indications are that Warner Bros. has no interest in employing Snyder to make a Justice League 2, or any other kind of continuation of Snyder's DC storylines. Snyder himself is well-aware of that, but chose to end his Justice League with a major cliffhanger anyway. Here's why.

As frustrating as it will no doubt be for many dedicated fans to stream the Snyder Cut on HBO Max and be left with an open-ended conclusion, Zack Snyder's Justice League couldn't really end any other way. It's well-known that Snyder's Justice League movie was intended to directly set up a sequel that continued its high-stakes story. With that sequel unlikely to materialize any time soon, some might argue that Snyder should've fashioned some kind of real ending for the movie he finally did get to make. However, that decision would run counter to the intent with which the Snyder Cut was finally made.

Snyder was allowed by Warner Bros. to finish up his previously shot footage - as well as film a small amount of additional scenes - and fashion it into the version of Justice League he always intended to release, or at least the closest thing possible. To try and tack on an unplanned new ending in an effort to make Zack Snyder's Justice League end conclusively would be to betray the entire spirit behind fans' demand to see Snyder's original vision for the film. Plus, until the Snyder Cut was finally announced, Batman V Superman spent years serving as its own unresolved ending to Snyder's DCEU arc. At least now Snyder gets to wrap things up on his own terms.
