New details about the nature of the Mother Boxes in Justice League emerged during Zack Snyder's livestream commentary of Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeSnyder announced the Vero livestream the night before as part of the four-year commemoration of the release of the film, with the event marking Snyder's first audio commentary for the movie. As tends to be the case with Snyder's DC films today, the topic of the Justice League Snyder Cut was the ever-present elephant in the room and popped up a few times during the livestream.

The polarized reception to Batman v Superman would leave Warner Bros. in a state of trepidation regarding the direction Justice League was heading, despite the movie having always been positioned as lighter in tone than its predecessor. Ultimately, following Snyder's departure from the film in May 2017, Warner Bros. commissioned extensive reshoots that would completely remold Justice League from Snyder's original plan. Since the movie's theatrical debut in November of 2017, cries for the Snyder Cut have remained persistent, with cast members like Jason Momoa getting into the mix, and Snyder himself trickling out details of his version of the movie on social media.

During his Vero livestream commentary for Batman v Superman, Snyder revealed Superman's death in battle against Doomsday awakened the three Mother Boxes hidden on Earth, stating, "If you really wanted to wake up a mother box, you would do it like this." Snyder further elaborated that Superman's final scream, at the moment of his and Doomsday's death, was essentially echoed far enough away from Earth that it brought the Mother Boxes to life. In addition to an image previously released by Snyder, showing Superman's death from a different perspective captioned with the words "He has yet to rise," this can now be added to the many, many changes the reshoots made to Snyder's Justice League.

Batman v Superman Trinity

Though the Mother Boxes are still very central to the plot of the theatrical incarnation of Justice League, there's nothing in the movie to indicate that they were awakened by Superman's death or anything else. Furthermore, Superman's scream carries with it the clear sound of an echo. Snyder is well-known for his attention to detail as a filmmaker, and his new revelation about Superman's death now makes clear this was more than a choice of aesthetics for Batman v Superman's take on the Death of Superman.

Over the past two years, Snyder has revealed an astonishing amount of material demonstrating the differences between the two versions of Justice League -- mostly in image and storyboard form on social media. With 214 minutes worth of content to pull from, his latest revelation shows that a virtual bottomless pit of teases remains for the world to see. This newest reveal, regarding the role of Superman's death in awakening the Mother Boxes, just illustrates how much planning Snyder was doing for Justice League. It also shows that Batman v Superman played into the story of the Snyder Cut to an even greater extent than what was already known.
