How did Zack Snyder get away with Superman (Henry Cavill) wearing the Black suit for Justice League? In 2017, the theatrical version of the movie was released, but it wasn't the original narrative intended for the film. As everyone knows, the last-minute director switch between Snyder and Joss Whedon resulted in extensive reshoots with the final cut skipping key elements and plotlines that the former intended to tackle. Among those were cut from the official iteration of the blockbuster includes the debut of Superman's Black Suit.

This confused fans considering that people involved in the project hyped up the exciting possibility of seeing the aforementioned suit, such as Cavill, who posted a photo of the monochromatic garb. Backing this up, several tie-in merchandise items for Justice League depicting the armor were also released. It turns out, Superman's Black suit was originally going to be in the film, for some reason, like much of the character's arc, it was ultimately scrapped out during post-production.

During his appearance at the fan-organized Justice Con over the weekend, Snyder debuted the first footage of Superman wearing the Black suit. Functioning as a teaser to his upcoming Justice League project for HBO Max, which would reveal his original plans for the narrative, the clip featured the newly-resurrected Man of Steel wearing the dark armor while approaching Alfred (Jeremy Irons). The panel had to discuss the suit and how they filmed the scenes with it. Apparently, Warner Bros. was against the idea. The filmmaker, however, was set on using it, so he had to be a little creative in including it.

Justice League Black Suit Superman

According to Snyder, Warner Bros. didn't want to use Superman's Black suit in Justice League because it gives the impression of a darker film - something that they were actively avoiding; hence, they didn't have an actual costume for Henry Cavill to wear. Instead, they used his classic red and blue suit with plans to color correct during post-production. This wasn't as easy as it sounds. As the director recalled, they added "some little adjustments in the suits that would make it easier to dial it, to make it contrast a little bit more." To make sure that they can easily switch the color of the suit without it looking heavily edited, they even done private experimentations on editing applications. Judging on what fans had seen on the newly-released clip of Justice League, it's safe to say that Snyder and his VFX team were able to find ways to make sure that what wanted to do was feasible.

The lengths Snyder went to make sure that Superman can sport the Black suit despite not having an actual costume for it with the use of VFX makes what happened to the character in Justice League more appalling. Due to the mustache Cavill was sporting for Mission: Impossible - Fallout during reshoots, Warner Bros. had to digitally remove his facial hair in post-production, and the result wasn't exactly good. At least now, fans can look forward to a better-looking Superman wearing the Black Suit on the screen when Snyder's project for HBO Max releases next year.
