Justice League Filmed Superman Black Suit Scenes

Justice League's cinematographer is confirming that there were indeed scenes shot featuring Superman's iconic black costume, but that they were among the many scenes directed by Zack Snyder that were cut after the filmmaker left the movie's production.

From virtually the moment of his death at the hands of Doomsday in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, savvy fans were anticipating a visual homage to the "Death of Superman" saga that film echoed. In the 1993 saga of Superman's demise, he eventually returned to life sporting a striking black version of his costume (as well as a gloriously '90s mullet). Henry Cavill offered hints of the suit's inclusion in Justice League, though an anonymous source claiming to be involved with the film's production recently said that the suit was never slated to be in the film.

That has been contradicted by a decidedly more concrete source. In an interview with Inverse, Justice League cinematographer Fabian Wagner confirms that the black suit was part of Snyder's plans for the film at some point, but were among the many scenes that wound up on the cutting room floor after Joss Whedon radically overhauled the film through extensive reshoots:

There were [scenes shot]. It’s a cool looking costume. Sadly we didn’t see that either in the final cut. Zack takes his time with telling the stories and I’ve always liked that about his movies. There are a few scenes that I was very much looking forward to seeing which unfortunately got cut.

This is just the latest confirmation that the version of Justice League we ultimately saw was massively different from what was originally intended. As Justice League continues to underperform at the box office, fans have been clamoring to see more of Snyder's original version of the film - though an actual Snyder cut is probably unfeasible.

Even before Snyder departed production to deal with a family tragedy, Justice League was a troubled production, with reports emerging that Warner Bros. contemplated firing Snyder before filming began in the wake of Batman V Superman's polarizing reception. The version of Justice League that was released seemed much more eager to please fans and audiences than the sprawling, difficult Batman V Superman, so it's a bit surprising that it would exclude the much anticipated black version of the Superman costume. It seems unlikely the speculation over what could have been with Justice League is going to die down any time soon, and this is only going to increase the volume of fans loudly demanding a look at the road not taken.
