Thanks to this weekend's release of the final Justice League trailer and the buzz ahead of tonight's Star Wars: The Last Jedi debut, the two blockbusters topped last week in social media buzz. While the domestic box office took a hit this summer, blockbusters have still been doing strong overall. The usual round of flops have emerged, but movies from Marvel, DC, Fox, and Warner Bros have all made their respective studios a sizable return. Of course, there are still a few more big movies left in the year.

Marvel will be releasing their third film of the year next month in the form of Thor: Ragnarok (which is already being praised by critics), followed a couple weeks later by WB's Justice League. Both movies have been doing well online lately, but it was Justice League and Star Wars: The Last Jedi that dominated discussions on social media platforms last week - even in the face of the buzz around Ragnarok, as well as the trailer launch for the 2018 sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising.

Variety is reporting that Justice League won the week in terms of social media chatter, thanks to a renewed round of promotion and the final Justice League trailer dropping online Sunday morning. Thanks to the movie's appearance at New York Comic Con, last week featured plenty of Justice League news and content, and the big trailer helped send it over the edge to generate some 190,000 new conversations on social media.

The Last Jedi, meanwhile, came close behind thanks to the promise of a new trailer. Tonight, both tickets will go on sale for The Last Jedi and the first full-length trailer will arrive. While 123,000 new conversations where generated based on the film this week, its total of 2.8 million conversations will likely expand considerably once the trailer arrives.

Ragnarok ended up generating 800,000 new conversations thanks to a smattering of marketing, after it topped San Diego Comic-Con earlier this summer with the release of its second trailer. As the film's release approaches, expect it to land back on top in terms of social media buzz. Meanwhile, thanks to the release of the Pacific Rim Uprising trailer, the sequel was the topic of 58,000 new social media conversations this past week.

Considering how much The Last Jedi dominated the news cycle after its teaser dropped, the film should top social media for at least the next week alone. After that, Ragnarok and Justice League may have to duke it out for social media supremacy, considering how close their respective theatrical releases are. Social media buzz doesn't always correlate with box office success, but here the online discussions probably are a fair indicator of how much general interest there is in these three 2017 tentpoles.
