DC Extended Universe Superman actor Henry Cavill says he isn't returning to film any new scenes for the Justice League Snyder Cut. The Snyder Cut - an alternate version of the 2017 movie that stays true to Zack Snyder's original vision - was oft discussed by fans of the filmmaker but wasn't confirmed for a public release until earlier this year. The director himself announced the Justice League Snyder Cut will release in 2021 on HBO Max during a watch party of Man of Steel, Cavill's first turn as Superman. However, there were many questions about the Snyder Cut, including the exact date of when it will release on WarnerMedia's streaming service.

At the time, it was also unclear if the Snyder Cut would be released as a movie or TV show (though it's since been confirmed to be a four-episode series), and whether any of the cast would need to return for additional filming or other work like ADR. Initially, it was reported some of the cast may need to return, but it seemed unlikely significant reshoots would occur. Yesterday, it was reported that Justice League reshoots for the Snyder Cut will indeed take place next month, with Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and Ray Fisher to return as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Cyborg respectively. However, Cavill's latest comments seem to cast some doubt on those reports.

In an interview with Collider to promote his new Netflix movie Enola Holmes, Cavill was asked if he would need to shoot any additional scenes or be involved in the Justice League Snyder Cut in any way. Cavill replied:

Not shooting anything additional. No. It’s all stuff that has been already done. Obviously I don’t know how things are going to evolve and change and adapt depending on now a different length of movie and whatever may happen in post-production. Whatever lessons may be learned from what is it four years since Justice League came out? Four years’ worth of fan reaction. For me…I’m now just watching the party.

Henry Cavill in Justice League

It should be noted that Collider specifies their interview with Cavill was conducted prior to the report about the Justice League Snyder Cut reshoots. It's possible that Cavill knew he'd be doing reshoots but was prohibited from confirming as much before the news was made public. It's also possible that the report about the reshoots wasn't entirely accurate, at least in regards to Cavill's return. The actor is currently filming The Witcher season 2 and the Justice League Snyder Cut reshoots will reportedly happen next month, indicating Cavill may be busy at the time. If he is involved in the reshoots, though, he could be taking a short break from The Witcher, just as he did from Mission: Impossible - Fallout for the theatrical cut's additional photography. That said, new COVID-19 safety protocols would make it a much longer break.

In the Justice League theatrical cut, which included additional filming directed by Joss Whedon, it was fairly easy to tell when a Superman scene was filmed by Snyder versus his replacement because of Cavill's infamous mustache removal from the reshoots footage. Based on the amount of Superman scenes with the CGI upper lip, Whedon didn't use very much of Snyder's Superman footage, meaning there may not be any additional scenes Cavill would have to film. While that seems unlikely, since most superhero movies require reshoots of some kind, it is possible. For now, Cavill, Snyder or the studio will need to offer further clarification before it's known what exactly the Superman actor's involvement is in the Justice League Snyder Cut reshoots.
