Superman's opening in the Snyder Cut of Justice League was very different than the theatrical cut. A far cry from the shaky cell phone footage of the children interviewing Superman, Zack Snyder potentially had a much grander and epic opening sequence in the Snyder Cut of Justice League.

Zack Snyder's DC saga was always leaning more for the vibe of The Lord of the Rings trilogy than it was to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Each film was to seamlessly thread into the next, creating one large story rather than multiple small stories interlocking towards a common goal. Snyder might have intended to continue this with his cut of Justice League through a Superman-focused opening sequence.

The opening of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice heavily influences the thought of one complete DC story. The beginning of the movie picked up in the middle of Man of Steel's explosive third act. While that first DCEU film showed the fight between Superman and Zod purely from the Man of Steel's perspective, Batman v Superman opted to show it from Bruce Wayne's. The third act of Man of Steel and the opening sequence of Batman v Superman perfectly stand side by side. By retreading it from a new perspective, an entire story was born and the motivation for Bruce Wayne was established. Zack Snyder appears to have intended to do the same with Justice League, this time using the death of Superman as the catalyst, setting the tone for the rest of the film.

Justice League Snyder Cut Superman Has Yet To Rise

Zack Snyder shared a photo of Superman's death with the words "He Has Yet To rise." The shot was a new perspective of Superman's final moments in Batman v Superman, complete with a new angle of his sacrifice. As Superman died, Lex Luthor was busy communicating with Steppenwolf, the exiled Apokoliptian New God. From the trailer of Justice League, we hear Steppenwolf communicating with Darkseid's servant, Desaad, telling him there is no Kryptonian on Earth anymore and "this world will fall."

At the end of the movie, Lex Luthor tells Batman "the bell's already been rung. And he's heard it," indicating Superman's death alerted Darkseid himself. A potential moment of Superman's sacrifice transitioning to scene of Steppenwolf letting Darkseid know that time to strike is now would be an epic, and thematically concise way to continue the Zack Snyder DC saga.

This opening would have a strong parallel to The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which opened with a new perspective on the death of Gandalf. The sequence re-treaded the final moments of Gandalf the Grey and his sacrifice to make sure the Fellowship survives. Not only did it begin the film in a way to hook audiences immediately through an emotional moment, but it also explored what happened after, bringing a new perspective to the entire moment. Eventually, it led to the rebirth of Gandalf as Gandalf the White as he arrives to turn the tide. All of this can easily be attributed to Superman as well, as his role is quite similar to Gandalf's in many ways. Both gave their lives in the previous film and both return stronger and more powerful than ever. If this influence carries merit, then the opening sequence of Justice League featuring Superman's death makes perfect sense.

It is clear Zack Snyder was opting to create a grand and mythologically dense DC Comics story. WB, in an effort to disconnect Justice League from Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, removed many sequences of this ilk to give the film a fresh start. Clearly the move backfired, Instead of an opening sequence on a scale of Superman's death, audiences were treated to phone camera footage of two kids interviewing Superman about fighting hippos as he compares the symbol of hope that represents his Kryptonian lineage to car keys. The Snyder Cut of Justice League is a completely different film to the one that fans got in 2017. Perhaps audiences will be treated to the true Superman opening sequence when the Snyder Cut eventually sees the light of day.
